This book tells the story of Hamra who accidentally got caught in the mystical quest of reverting a weretiger to a human. Set in Langkawi during the pandemic, the author introduced to us a young girl living with her parents and grandparents on the island. Hamra has pent-up resentment for having to be a “grown-up” doing endless house chores, caring for her dementia grandmother all while not having her frontliner-mother to care for her as she should have had. Her resentment unleashed the rebellious teenager in her and that’s when the story started to unfold.
To be very honest, I had high expectations of this book. So it saddened me how hard it was for me to finish it. I started reading it in April and it took me three months to even reach half of it. I just wasn’t motivated enough to continue reading the book.
That being said, once I reached half of it, it became easier to enjoy the story. I really love the idea of the author incorporating Malaysian myths, legends, and folklore into the story. The author threw in humour here and there, some were amusing. In all fairness, the author admitted that this book was the hardest book she’s written, and it does show while reading it.

Too slow and not interesting enough to keep reading. Maybe not in the right headspace to read a middle grade
