What I Did Like:
+The concept of killing or reviving things by touch is one that I’ve seen before but this came across in a novel way. The author paid careful attention to details like food that really brought the story to life.
+I love originality in stories. This one brough the forest to life almost as another character and that was quite impressive. It added to the sort of gothic feel of the entire book.
+Maisie is an exceptional character. She has all of my favorite character traits. She’s flawed, curious, and loving. I enjoyed her story immensely.

Who Should Read This One:
-Readers who like multi-layered fantasy that comes together well in the end will enjoy this one. Particularly those readers who like gothic vibes and darker books.

My Rating: 4 Stars
This one is well written and will please readers of the genre!

I loved the premise and ideas behind this gothic story and there were a few scenes in particular I relished. The writing style was nice, alternating between the present, the past women in the wild, and the present set in the wild. The storyline could've been stronger, and I wished there were more character development, especially with the women of the wild. The ending was also very lackluster and felt rushed. Overall I enjoyed it, I will be looking out for the next book from Julia Fine.

dark but I couldn't put it down. a story of women and girls who were mistreated and went to the woods for safety - but safety is not the same as a fulfilling life.

I don't usually write reviews for books. I don't have the talent as some on here. But I wanted to mention a few things for others possibly on the fence about reading this book.

It's enchanting in it's storytelling. She does a good job with the build up of the story. It was difficult to get into at first, I think because she wanted you to be inside of Maisie's head and to really set the tone for you to understand what it's like living in her world.

I didn't find the time shifts difficult, she heads them in a different font and writes in different perspective so it was easy for me to keep up with the women of the forest.

The only thing I had a difficult time placing was the way Maisie described everything. Likely due to the fact she was limited on what she had access to reading. I got confused a few times thinking it was set not in present time with her descriptions.

I really enjoyed Maisie's ability to take personal responsibility at a crucial point after meeting the girls at the river. She owned up to her actions and realized her mistakes and she learned from them.

I highly recommend this book for the lovers of magical realism (which I didn't think I'd enjoy, thanks to the author for this wonderful example!)

Hope this helps! :)
