Wow, what a challenging read. It weaves so many heavy topics together, I stopped reading at one point because I realized I was legitimately upset. This book dives into wildy uncomfortable topics, doesn’t hide them behind euphemisms, and characters deal with the fallout however they can. Almost nothing gets a neat, tidy ending. An amazingly nuanced book, I was shocked to read other people’s responses to it and find that they differed so much from my own. They was so much awfulness from both Human and Oankali. I personally ended up more disgusted by the Oankali but I can see how that is hugely influenced by my own experiences. My outlook is forever altered by this book.
Moderate: Genocide, Infertility, Rape, Sexism, Slavery, Forced institutionalization, Gaslighting, Colonisation

I never doubted that Octavia Butler was rightly praised as one of the great authors of the scifi genre. However, I was never sure if I should actually read one of her books.
While I do love complex novels with lots of layers, I have to admit that sometimes these books fail to keep me interested (it's me, not you, Gene Wolfe). I need some good narrative hook to keep me interested when it comes to Scifi, a good concept alone is like eating pure unsweetened granola. Lucky for me, this novel turned out to be absolutely mesmerizing. The narrative at its core is strong and masterfully intertwined with the layers of subtext making this a true page turner.
What strikes me in this novel is how unapologetically messy it is. There are a lot of things in this book that can be called p r o b l e m a t i c to put it lightly. The characters in this novel acknowledge these problematic elements. The narration never glosses over these problematic elements. And after all this acknowledging everybody moves on, leaving the reader highly, highly conflicted.
This novel leaves a knot in my stomach and I say that as a compliment.

currently at the beginning of part 4 of the second book in this set. it's interesting! not as good as fledgling, which is the other Octavia Butler I've enjoyed. Lillith and Akin both don't seem as fully developed as main characters as they should be.
I am really (enjoying might not be quite the right word) the whole "humanity is doomed" premise - especially because the reasoning is so simple: the innate conflict of human hierarchical behavior and our intelligence. the comparison with the Oankali, who can literally all communicate at once to reach a true consensus, is not so subtle, but is very interesting! I'm reading other books as I work through these, but I would recommend to those who enjoy more meandering science fiction.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the trilogy. I liked the aliens, I liked the fact they where alien, not just an extension of a base human characteristic.
however the second was just boring, and the third I couldn't be bothered with.
