This is my first real dip into a Black Widow story, and it was a blast! The unique art style and action in the quick stories made this a quick read, but the dialogue was wonderfully composed and added to Natasha Romanoff's complicated character. These stories moved very quickly so it's hard to pick a favourite one, but this is a must have for all fans of the Black Widow!

2.5 stars, really.

The good: Consistent, beautiful art. Natasha deliberately tries to *not kill* various henchmen baddies, and their little dog too. In fact, her way of dealing with a trained attack/guard dog was probably my favourite moment of this book. Especially when contrasted to [b:She-Hulk, Vol. 2: Disorderly Conduct|23017946|She-Hulk, Vol. 2 Disorderly Conduct|Charles Soule|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1427558935s/23017946.jpg|42587496], which I reviewed recently and was put off by multiple instances of unnecessary brutality against animals by our otherwise smart and justice-loving protagonist.

The bad: Too many forced spider metaphors and other narrative-driven comparisons between Black Widow and various animals. Nothing too exciting ever happens in this book. It was just mediocre all around in terms of the plot and script.

I love the coloring for this series and the outlines inked in red. Like with Fraction's Hawkeye, this series focuses on Natasha's daily life when she's not doing Avengers duties. However, there were lots of SHIELD jobs here. There's a parallel too with the pet, being alone... which is fitting how they intersected her day with Clint. And her remark not to intervene actually validates how both of them need to be there for each other, or atleast each of them have someone or some group which eventually they learned they need. It's a good volume overall but I just don't grasp how Natasha was able to atone for her past. Maybe with all those actions they should add an overarching personal narrative.

The plot arc was a little fractured and unfocused at times, but the artwork was really great. I especially loved the style of line they used to convey movement, which look like threads of a spider web. I also enjoyed the character development, as well as the clever ways text and image were made to echo one another at points. It certainly made me love Black Widow more than I already do, and I look forward to reading the next one.

Mein erster Comic. Black Widow und ein kleines Kätzchen sind eine super Mischung. ;) Ich hätte aber gerne mehr, oder zumindest irgendwas, über Black Widows Vorgeschichte erfahren.
