This book started off so strong, full of whimsy and mystery. Despite the slow build-up, I was excited to find out where, exactly, the author would take us. Unfortunately, Sutherland took us to our local McDonald's. The Hollow sisters' quirks and backstory were so interesting, yet Sutherland gave us the most lackluster answers. The worst part is that she throws in an unnecessary event towards the end just so that it can end with room for a sequel.

Wow, this was an absolutely fascinating and spooky book. It’s full of twist and turns, that you can’t even beginn to predict. It is so hard to put down, the story completely encases you, pulling you further into it‘s dark and rotting depths.

Alsoo there is sapphic rep!!!!

House of Hollow delivered exactly the kind of creepy, fantastical vibes I hope for from dark fantasy horror books. Throughout the book I made educated guesses about what happened to the girls and who sought them because of the lore I am familiar with from other cultures. Even so, the narrative continuously surprised me and was equal parts sweetly breathtaking, creepy, and grotesque. The sisters share an inconceivable (to me) bond, and that alone makes them captivating. The ending left me with unanswered questions, but the girls also did not yet have those answers. Open endings and mysterious pasts intrigue me, because my mind keeps whirring over the story and its characters well after I've closed the back cover. WARNING. Once I fell into the cracks of the Hollows' world, I opened the book every chance I got.

Premise was solid enough, but it had far more potential as an adult novel. Publishing as YA limited how much Sutherland was able to explore her ideas, and as a result… it wasn’t very good.
