Rating memoirs is increasingly hard. Love Michelle, love her message, love her story— it is especially needed now; however, I find myself wanting more from the writing itself.
I hate politics. I think the media is a joke. I'm disgusted with our polarized party system. I recognize that it's impossible for one person to tell a story from a universal perspective, but throughout this book I found myself thinking that if we could just cut through all the garbage and get to know each other, it would all be so much easier.
As trump has been sworn in for a second term I needed something uplifting and hopeful to read. Listening to Michelle Obama read the audio book helped bring back a little of the spark of hope that had been kindled during Kamala Harris’s campaign that was dashed when the Ass Hat won.
My up bring may be quite different as a white woman and a millennial, raised in a middle class/lower middle class family. But she speaks to me. I voted for the Obama’s both times. I liked listening to you both speak. Now his voice makes me cringe like fingernails on chalkboard

I read this book as an educator who found freedom in pursuing an education. Michelle’s memoir will be added to my list of books that speak to the transformative power of a high quality public education. Her story is remarkable and unlikely, inextricably tied to the force that was her husband. The book is broken up into three parts: Becoming Me, Becoming Us, and Becoming More. President Obama is central to Michelle’s story, but he is far from the focus. I was inspired by her desire to help the children of America and her mindfulness as a parent in navigating her children’s entrance into the public eye. By the end, she felt like a friend I’ve known most of my life. I’m sorry I waited so long to read this.
