Such an amazing autobiography. Inspiring reading her life story and hearing what was happening behind the scenes.

She is such a great writer. Her story is so many people’s story and her depth of wisdom and reflection are awe inspiring. She is and always be the BEST FLOTUS. I get to see her on Friday night and I am so excited.

Michelle Obama is an absolutely incredible storyteller. This story of her growing up, becoming a wife, mother and First Lady was emotional, raw, truthful, authentic and provoking. I loved listening to her voice and hearing all of her experiences. I loved her honesty throughout the story and how passionate she is.

As a fellow passionate woman who has been judged for her facial expressions and way of talking, walking and existing, I loved how passionately she spoke and how emotional she was throughout.

Her story of Becoming, of making something of herself, working hard, being passionate, speaking up for people who deserved to be spoken up for, caring for children, people of color, minorities, the underprivileged and the vulnerable was so inspiring. I would recommend this to everyone and anyone!!

Coming from a very conservative state, household and religion, I didn’t like the obamas while they were in office until the last 2 years or so. I judged them, probably spoke poorly of them, and disregarded them in my limited understanding of diversity, equality and the world beyond my community.

I LOVE the Obamas. Looking back at his presidency, realizing how incredible he was, she was and they were as a team, he was by far the best president we have had and I miss them leading us. Getting to hear this story of their experiences really solidified my love for them and gave me further perspective into their experiences.

I have nothing but amazing things to say about this book. 10 out of freaking 10

Michelle Obama's voice and experiences are deeply informative and inspiring, offering a healing balm in a time where the voices of so many who came from a start like hers continue to be underestimated and silenced. It is rare that I feel I'm going to miss a book when I put it down, but I am sorely going to miss the shelter of the reflections, anecdotes, and jubilant life this book contains.

I'm giving this book 5 stars because it surprised me in the best way. I'm not very interested in politics, even those that I agree with, and never planned to read this book. However, I heard so many great things from so many different people that it piqued my curiosity. I read it at a much slower pace than my regular reads because I was going through a busy couple of weeks, however I just finished it and I'm in awe. It did a great job at humanizing the Obamas and, to a larger degree, telling the story of Michelle Obama (previously Michelle Robinson). She talks about her life, struggles, victories, and impacts that made her who she is and that got her to where she was. It's inspiring, insightful and doesn't pretend to be anything that its not. Not everything is perfect, nor will everything ever be. Both individual lives and the livelihood of our country continue to grow and change with many valleys and peaks interspersed. Its important to remember that, and this book does a great job of highlighting the journey of both (separately and intertwined).

I don’t usually rate memoirs. I don’t typically believe in rating one’s personal story. But I can’t express how deeply moving Michelle’s voice was here, both in the poetic sharing of her experiences and inspiring hope for the future. I found myself relating to her as a minority woman raised by a community rich in only love and was awestruck by the impossible role to which she eventually acclimated with grace. While the two memoirs are vastly different in content, I can only compare the experience of reading Becoming to that of reading Know my Name by Chanel Miller. Both strong, female minority voices leaving me all at the same time inspired, heartbroken, infuriated, and hopeful. Both stories being those I can’t wait to re read myself and will without a doubt encourage my future daughters to read.

Listened via audiobook. Michelle herself reads it, which was a wonderful treat.

Becoming is a refreshingly candid account of Michelle Obama’s life. Her recall is excellent and without rose coloring, though clearly told through an adult lens. It was interesting and frustrating to hear the double standards she navigated as a woman, a POC, and both. She captured the awkwardness and discomfort she felt ascending from a status of “middle class” American to the upper echelons of American society perfectly. Obama expertly described the challenges of American politics, finishing the book as Trump was beginning his first term as president. Her observations of his incoming administration were spot on and remain (unfortunately) true 7 years later.

The only critiques I have for Becoming are the length (19 hours of listening and almost 450 written pages) and her occasionally overly specific descriptions; Obama LOVES her adjectives.
