Rule #1: Don't read this, listen to it. That's the only rule. Hearing Michelle Obama give her story from her own words was powerful, warm, and when the book ended, was like I was receiving a warm hug from her.
This has to be one of the easiest biographies I have ever read, Obama tells her story in a practical, yet gripping manner. Her life was fairly normal by her definition, but still so different from my own that I loved hearing about her upbringing in the city of Chicago - which is a city that I have fallen in love with very deeply.
I was not actively participating in politics when Barrack Obama was president - because I was a minor through both elections he ran, which unfortunately - whether by my own willful ignorance or my upbringing - meant that I tracked very little of what he did. But hearing about Michelle's personal experience of that time was so revealing of the demands placed upon the President, as well as his personal loved ones. I'm not here to use my review to talk about whether our Presidents deserve that amount of power or not, but all the same it instilled in me both a sense of respect, wonder, and also disdain at what we've normalized in those positions.
The ending by far held the greatest power for me, and I think I aptly timed reading this after the disappointment, fear and grief that has overcome me since the 2024 election. Michelle's calm courage and insightful hope is reassuring, and I found courage in myself reading about her experiencing stepping away from the White House, knowing who was taking her place, but also the reality that even when gone, her and Barrack's portrait will remain in that building, a reminder to what they did there.
Perhaps our country isn't as ready to face it's flaws as we thought, and perhaps there are voices louder than the majority who are making selfish choices that hurt our communities, but I have to believe that they will not be the permanence of what the United States is. Someday, we will once again house the tired, the poor, and the huddled masses yearning to breathe free.

Amazing!!!
This book need to be listen... Michelle Obama's voice reading you her own life is amazing. Is like having her telling you some secrets as friends. Totally worth the 19 hours of listening to her voice.

I don't think I've ever cried so consistently through a book before. I was not prepared to fall in love so deeply with Michelle and her story. I found myself crying and laughing and crying (again) as she navigated her identity and her relationships through an inspiring life journey.

This book did more than entertain me or teach me or inspire me to think; it gave me a role model when I didn't know I needed one. Read this now.

Loved it. Listened to it as an audiobook from her own voice mostly. So amazing and such an inspiring woman!
This book is full of emotion, reading through the life of someone I admire was an inspiring thing.
Often times we go through situations in life, or experience certain emotions and can not find the words to express how we feel. Michelle Obama found a way to put these feelings into words in such a beautiful way.
Upon loosing her friend she wrote
" I'd see all these people looking happy in their cars, walking the sidewalk in their summer clothes, sitting idly in cafes, and working at their desks, all of them oblivious to what happened to Suzanne-"
When we experience loss it is difficult to understand how the world can just keep on moving, the thought that the rest of the world is "oblivious" to your loss was something that struck me.
When reading this book I found myself overwhelmed. I had a such a strong feeling of happiness as I read her story. I don't often get teary or sentimental when reading. I can name only a handful of books that brought tears to my eyes, and this book is one of them.
It's really hard to explain this book, although Michelle Obama experienced loss and sadness, the parts of this book that made me emotional where more often than not when she spoke about happy times. The steadfastness and loving pride of her father, the stubborn love of her aunt, or the humble adoration for her children.
It is an inspiring read, although I can not find the proper words to describe this book, I cannot recommend it enough.
