LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! Brilliant Book.
I have read many ABC book to the kids over the years and this by far is the very best of them. There is alliteration - love it, and it good alliteration too. There are all kinds of animals, instruments, food and miscellany on the page that starts with the letter. Sometimes you have to think how it's being used. This was a joy. It was the smallest details that were so enjoyable.
The never-gonna-stop nephew looked at this for an hour looking for all the little details. Both kids read this with joy. They both gave it 5 stars and they want to keep the book. I have to make sure the nephew doesn't hide it in his room so I can't return it to the library. Why, oh why did I never know of Graeme Base growing up. He is brilliant.
I have so many favorite things from this. I love what he did with 'X'. I love the baboon playing the bassoon. Dalick's from Dr. Who show up in the 'Ds'. I like the Green Gorilla wearing gloves. There is a fairy. I love Kitty Koala and the 'K' page in general. I love the outrageous Ostrich. 'V' Wins best alliteration. 'X' is the best for using the letter.

With many fresh batches of babies soon to be delivered into my life, I have been researching, purchasing, and reading children's books. Animalia is a book that I vaguely recalled loving as a child, but had not looked at in more than two decades. What I remembered was gorgeous illustrations and clever word play, but only vaguely. Well, after a wonderfully delicious read last night, I can say it is all that and more. The poetic nature of the alliteration brings a delightfully creative way to learning the alphabet, playing with words and their meanings; and the illustrations are a marvel!
All I can say is buy this for the child in your life! Unless you know me, and then wait a beat: because I may just be buying a few copies. ;)

This was a cute children's book. The pictures were very detailed with the alphabet titles.

A classic that has not aged at all. Kids young & old still love searching for all the hiding alliterative items, while you can also teach them about the alphabet, poetry and more.

A gorgeously detailed book that lends itself to time well spent identifying all the creatures big and small in the pages. Not a straight through read-aloud but a staple of classrooms everywhere.

Never let it be said that I dislike Graeme Base books. This one is, naturally, his best known. The art is astounding, with levels of detail that are staggering, making it re-readable over and over again. I love it. So do my kids. One to purchase, I think.

Read for the first time with kiddo, an abecedarian fan. Such gorgeous illustrations! I remember reading The Eleventh Hour as a kid but think I’d missed this one. Fun to find it now and share it with my own children.
