i was hoping for more magical realism like “100 years of solitude” and also less of the main guy being sorta an asshole the whole time to everyone. i do think garcía márquez does an amazing job of navigating the story in such a way where the characters can end up together at the end without making it completely irredeemable or out of character. also obviously his writing is very beautiful but it’s also long winded at times and makes things difficult to understand :/ sorry
I hate to say that I was let down by this book, as I anticipated something that would sweep me away. The writing is grandiose, and I appreciate Márquez's craft, yet the writing was not for me. I felt that this story could've been just as effective in short story form, no longer than a novella. Márquez is an extremely skillful writer, yet the majority of this book, in my humble opinion, served little to no purpose. There were only a handful of moments in the book that I thought were profound or significant. The overall story, I believe, is poignant, and I think that Márquez is a brilliant writer, but my main complaint is that it is laborious to read and frankly too long and erroneously detailed. I definitely think that I will continue to read Márquez's work because he's acclaimed for a reason and I hope to redeem his image in my mind, but I was let down by this book.

I can see why this is a classic in terms of reflecting on one's life, but in reality it's a cringe stalker story
Moderate: Stalking
Minor: Pedophilia, Rape, Sexual harassment
If your childhood love married another man, how long would you wait for her to be free once more?
I read this again because I vaguely remembered liking it, but couldn't remember much about it. Unique and strange but rather wonderful. I love how it flits between the stories of the various characters, and I really like Marquez's style of telling backstories that in another author's hands would seem like random exposition but in his become almost like short stories themselves within the main text.
The book is definitely dated. Florentino Ariza's relationship with a fourteen-year-old is described poetically enough but feels really quite uncomfortable, and there's definitely some madonna-whore dichotomizing going on. However, the entire book is suffused with a sense of unreality (though it's just enough realistic enough to not put me off, unlike 100 Years of Solitude), so its characters' crimes don't feel as real/significant.
I still haven't really worked out if I like the ending. I hate Florentina Ariza's "love" for Fermina Diaz which is really just obsession. Like in Wuthering Heights, he spends more time talking about love than really loving. "Love" consumes Ariza's life and deeply affects the women he sleeps with to escape it. Not for me. But I adore Marquez's writing style so it feels poetic and beautiful nevertheless.
Favourite bits were the description of Ariza's grief for her husband. Literally just a paragraph - made me tear up.

Surprised that I enjoyed the writing enough to overlook everything that was difficult to stomach and still give this book nearly four stars

Moderate: Pedophilia, Rape
