Tried really hard for 4 hours to listen to this, but I just couldn’t. The blatant oversimplification of human behavior is astounding. Also an early sentence like „this is not to put people into boxes…“ while spending the literal rest of the book putting people into boxes is just so dumb. Really not worth my time, DNF

Surrounded By Idiots has been on my TBR for years now, I keep meaning to buy/borrow it and read it. It was eye-opening and thought provoking about exactly who we are personality wise, how we affect ourselves, and how it colors our views of the people around us. I was so sure the entire time I was reading that I was clearly and blue/red with some green, but at the end when I took the quiz, I was a blue with some green/red. It now makes me wonder about my coworkers…
The book seems to be heavily based on the DISC model from the psychologist William Moulton Marston's DISC, first published in 1928. So there is some scientific foundation to all this - although there is some debate around this. That said: I definitely enjoyed reading the book and took something away from it: the four behavioural types are easy to grasp and see in yourself and others. Erikson seems to often exaggerate and does some black/write drawing. At the same time I would probably do the same in a training: describe the exaggerated extremes to get the point across. Still: take it with a grain of salt and not at face value.

Am I rereading this right before my next job? Yes. Is it going to be of any help? Eeeh, who knows.
