Lie Beside Me

4.5 I liked the structure of this book, it was both written like a psychological thriller, a woman trying to figure out if she was a killer and like a detective story with a group of likeable police officers with their own back stories trying to solve the case. Made it more interesting than most

If you can get past the very improbable drunken benders
that one of the main characters is forever experiencing,
then you have a pretty run-of-the-mill whodunit with
not much in the way of twists.
Just a ho-hum read.

Gytha Lodge has given us yet another thrilling, messy and down-right impressive detective novel in the shape of Lie Beside Me, the third instalment to the Detective Jonah Sheens series.

Now, I will say, there was less of Mr Sheens himself within this novel, which I was a little gutted about (I dream about him being this gorgeous man that I want to know A LOT more about), however, that certainly didn't take anything away from the plot, or the other characters that we had more of instead.

One part of this novel that I absolutely loved is how much more of DS Hanson's backstory we get. In the first two novels, it is touched upon, and you get the feeling that there's a lot more to her story, but we certainly get some answers in this one. Aside from DCI Sheens, she has become my favourite character (I also love Ben Lightman too, please can they get together Gytha?!).

The main storyline throughout this novel is pretty impressive. I was honestly kept guessing the whole, damn, time. One minute Louise had done it, and the next I was sure her husband had, and then I was even second-guessing her best friend (who sounds super-fun by the way).

The reason I said above that this book was messy, is because Louise is a pretty mess. She's all over the place, from her drinking, to her misplaced loyalty to her husband. You slowly learn her life with her husband, and then what actually happened that night at the same time Louise does.

I won't say anything else, as this is a spoiler-free zone, but I encourage everyone that reads this to pick up a copy of this book, and if you haven't read the first two either, then please grab those too!

I am so ready to see what's coming with book 4!

Louise wakes up with a great hangover after a night out (nothing unusual) and as she looks beside her, she acknowledges a man. But who is he? Her husband is on a businesstrip in Geneva and something is very wrong with this man, he is icecold and there is blood everywhere. Of course Louise is the prime suspect in the latest case of DCI Jonah Sheens and his Southampton Crew. She has nearly no recollections about the night of the crime - only a few snippets, she tries to piece together.

„Lie Beside Me“ is a compelling, athmospheric and fast-paced page turner. The writing is impeccable and smart and pulls you straight inside the events. I’ve never read anything from Gytha Lodge before and I’ve clearly missed out, because the characters around DCI Sheens are all very complex and endearing. The author really knows how to keep you hooked and guessing until the nerve-wracking end.

Thank you NetGalley / Penguin Michael Joseph UK for providing me with this arc in return for an honest review.

I would like to thank the author, the publisher and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read an ARC of this book. Having read the previous two books by this author featuring Jonah Sheens I knew this would be a great read, but it surpassed all my expectations. The twists and turns the story took left me gasping at times and also close to tears on a few occasions it was utterly brilliant and I will be recommending it to everyone I know.
