Rollercoaster

Honestly I was still surprised by the emotional rollercoaster these two AMAZING authors are known for taking their readers on. I need book 3 like yesterday

This has got to be one of my absolute favourite sequels I’ve ever read! Sometimes the second book falls off the rails a little because it’s building up to the third book but this wasn’t the case for Aurora Burning. The stakes were much higher in this book and the consequences were heartbreaking

3.5 stars.

Portions of this book were great, and others weren't exactly my favorite. I really liked the POV chapters from Finian, Zila, and Kal, and enjoyed Tyler's adventures. I did not particularly like Aurora's chapters (or the character herself), and found her chapters to be the most tedious. Scarlet's chapters were fine. The thing I most disliked?
SpoilerThe entire team turning Kal out once they find out the truth regarding his parentage. He is clearly a good guy, someone who's trying to change things and make up for his father's choices, and the way four of the five of them just immediately turned on him made me really angry. What a great group of friends.
Also, the ending was confusing, and not just because it's a cliffhanger. It was really hard to follow all of the action and I wound up not really feeling much of anything when that should not have been the case. The book started out so well and then just fizzled to a pile of meh. I'm going to read the next book, because I want to see how everything ends, but this was not my favorite.

Actual rating: 3.75

Considering how eagerly I started this book after the first, I think the time it’s taken to finish the second speaks for itself. I understand momentum needs to build for a finale, but I definitely felt some middle-book-bog.

As much as I love Squad 312 and seeing the arcs for each character, the most interesting parts were the scenes with Tyler & Saedii; sure there’s a lot of info dumping, but the sexual tension. (The enemies to lovers torch burns bright here).

The first half of the book was riveting, as exciting and fast-paced as (arguably) the best parts of Book 1…but once we got to The Echo, not only did the pace feel like it briefly lost momentum, it also seemed to mark the point my love for both Auri & Kal started waning.
Spoiler (Their falling out and the subsequent choices of these two in particular thereafter gave me absolute whiplash.)

Spoiler Also, considering it was a massive point of contention, I feel like the reveal of Kal’s father being the “Starslayer” was actually not surprising? It felt more shocking that the Twins’ are half Syldrathi.

Despite my frustration with the aforementioned characters and brief lull, the writing was riveting (as usual) and the last chapter was absolute chaos, in the best way . If ever the stakes were at their highest, I’d say this book ends at the precipice, it leaves us in freefall (and that’s considering all the fuckery we’ve already been through).

this was some ride! 12/10

A painful yet satisfying sequel to the Aurora Rising!
