I just finished this book, literally five minutes ago, and I'm just... in shock... and not okay.
Who ends a book like this?!?!?!? (I mean yes I know the answer is Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff, this isn't my first rodeo, but STILL!)
Characters
Squad 312 is one of the greatest squads in fiction history. I adore every single one of them from Aurora Rising, and this sequel just made me love them more!
Kal is still my number one! And thank the maker that he is on this cover, because look at my beautiful boy! The fact that right off the bat we see how much he loves Auri and he's calling her his be'shmai. I SWOON! We also got to see more about his past and my heart bleeds for this boy. His childhood was rough, and it is incredible that he managed to get past that and become the amazing boy that he is.
Auri is still an amazing character and I loved that we got to watch her grow into her powers and become more confident. She is so badass and has so much pressure on her. I obviously love her with Kal and am so happy that she has embraced him.
Tyler Jones is such a dashing lad and I love him with all my heart. His plot was so intriguing in this book and I loved getting to see him stand on his own and see how brave and smart he truly is. Also, I am so digging the idea of him and Saedii together! Honestly I got such vibes starting with their first scene even though I definitely shouldn't have lol! And obviously part of me is sad to say that because of Cat. My heart does break for him having to deal with everything involving Cat, especially towards the end.
Scar is such a sassy bitch and I love her for it! This girl cracks me up every time I get to read her thoughts. I loved getting to see more of how much she cares for Ty and looks out for him, but also getting to see how she can step up and shine even when alone.
Fin is hilarious and I love him as much as ever! He has perfect comedic timing, but I never think it's too over the top. I am 100% rooting for him and Scar and I can't wait to see what happens with them!
Zila is such a unique character and I really hope we see more of her. I was so excited that her chapters were longer and that we got more of her and got to see some more emotion. Her past, holy fuck. I see why she is the way she is now and my heart breaks for her. What she went through was devastating and would mess anyone up. But I LOVE that she is starting to feel again!
Saedii I already mentioned but I'll just add that I really hope we see more of her!
Plot
So right from the beginning I was hooked because I loved the characters and I knew the journey they were on. That being said, I did feel at first like this one was a bit more of a filler, but that didn't make me love it any less!
Also things picked up pretty quickly and we definitely got lots of plot that moved along the story.

+Thank you for the summary at the beginning because I would have had no idea what was going on because I could barely remember the first book.
+I really didn't like Saedii for the most of the book but again in Part 4, I think I'm changing my mind.
+Scarlett. I think Scarlett was the luckiest of the characters in this book as she really came into her own.
+I like the plot twist and I like how the morals are very grey. Like who is actually the bad guy in this book?!
-Kal's chapters of his overbearing desire for Aurora was disappointing. All of his chapters, up until Part 4 felt repetitive.

The kiss at the end between Scarlett and Fin felt forced and very fan servicey which I didn't really care for. I kinda hope it's just a we nearly died kiss because Scarlett was a bad ass boss bitch in this book and I don't want that ruined for her by having a piney Fin.

SO. GOOD. I need the next one immediately. All the characters get more depth, more personality, more relationships, more everything.
Aurora Burning, second book in the series, and honestly my least favorite but still AMAZING. Audiobook is the way to go for this series, 100%. I'm not an Auri-Kal fan, because they are super melodramatic, but everyone else is *chef's kiss*. 10/10 recommend!
Overall a really great series and the 2nd book did not suffer from muddled middle syndrome! Ended in surprising way for me and I'm not certain where it will go next.
