If there is a Be'shmai of squads, Squad 312 definitely has the mix of characters that can act as a centre of gravity for my heart. 🩷 I love that we get multiple chapters or fragments in each of their POVs.

Beware: the ending is a huge cliffhanger. So huge a cliffhanger, actually, that it forces me to start the third book immediately. I cannot wait to learn what comes next. 😱🤩

4.5/5⭐️

What on earth. Just happened. Well, that was very well done. Amie and Jay have done it again. How does it just end there??

RATING: 4,5/5 STARS
PLOT OVERVIEW: After the events of the last book, Squad 312 is on the run from the Terran government. They are now fugitives, and everywhere they go, they are in danger. To add to the issues, Kal's sister, Saedii, is also hunting the crew. Luckily, they learn the Hadfield, the ship Auri was found on, has been located, and the black box inside it may be their saving grace. As Auri struggles to harness her power, the squad finds themselves in deeper trouble as they try to save the galaxy.
CHARACTERS: First of all, I'm literally upset this is over. Like, I loved this book. And the fact that I have to wait until NEXT MAY?????? I'm not happy. But let's get into characters. We were minus one this time around, and it just so happened to be the one character I fucking despised. :). Yay. So thankfully she didn't make many appearances. I am beginning to tolerate Tyler more as he becomes less of a Republican and ventures into his enemies to lovers trope. WHICH BY THE WAY. I totally guessed from their first interaction. I knew it was gonna be Saedii and someone. But oh my god they had me feeling some TYPE OF WAY!! I love the dynamic where they insult each other to no end, just treat each other like total shit. But then they have those moments where they look too long, where they OBVIOUSLY feel something for each other...God I love it so much. I literally liked Saedii better than Cat. I don't think I was supposed to hate her but it takes a lot to make me hate a female character. A lot of their actions, per se. But I liked her and can definitely see a redemption and a VERY interesting and HOT relationship with Tyler. I love them. Next we have Kal and Auri. Sooo, I had said I wanted more of them in the last book, but I found them so fucking boring as I got going. I like them with Squad 312. Together, except for the end, of course, I think they fit well together. But as a relationship? Yeah, they're cute or whatever but it's BORING. There needs to be like...fighting. Angst. I'm just not sold on the relationship. It isn't what I expected it to be. But it's okay, because the other ships make up for it. Separately, I like both characters. Obviously, Kal fucked up at the end, but I don't think the reaction from everyone was warranted. I mean, can you blame him for not saying? He can't control his parentage. But also, can you blame Scar and everyone else for feeling like he betrayed them? No. But I know they'll work it out, whatever. Auri is great too, she's a little boring, but it's not like I want her dead. Like Cat. <3. ANYWAYS, I don't have an issue with Auri EXCEPT that I think Kal was right and that she should absolutely not cut all ties with her past to be the "trigger". She seemed...I don't know...colder? It felt wrong. Next we have Zila, who I wish we had more content of. I really like her, and I like her growth as a character, I thought it was super interesting. I want more of her. She's also quite funny. Now onto my favorites, Scarlett and Finian. Finian, specifically, carries this series. Not that I don't like anyone else, but I think he is probably the best. He is HIGHLY relatable, and he's funny too. I literally would read an entire book just about him. He's perfect and beautiful and six feet tall and he deserves everything good in the world. I love how he is also just freely bisexual. There's no questions about it, he's super open and I love his commentaries on everyone. Scarlett is another favorite of mine. I find her character EXTREMELY relatable to me as well. She's definitely very funny and deserves more chapters. I loved learning more about her backstory too. Her commentary on her boobs is fucking hilarious. (I am now realizing a man might have written that...which is a little weird. I hope SHE wrote it instead of him ummm...anyways) Now, did I not predict this ship? I did, didn't I? Yeah... and I definitely still ship it. I was waiting this whole book for Scarlett to acknowledge it and SHE WOULDN'T and Finian kept acknowledging it so I figured they're doing this to me for a reason. And I was right. There's a few moments where you're like...wait a minute...what does this mean? For example, when Kal woke up because Auri was awake with Finian...but Scarlett woke up too. It could be that she just woke up, but now that we know she has Syldrathi blood it could possibly be something else. When Finian and her were in the elevator and she forgot everything except him in the moment...oh my god. But yeah, for her, there were little hints towards it, where she flirted with him, comforted in his familiarity. They were also finishing each other's sentences, Scarlett would think something and he would say it, AHHH. And THE END. Oh my god. I had like ten pages and I was like WHERE IS MY CONTENT? Have no fear my friends. They NEARLY made out. And she called him beautiful. And it still managed to be an entertaining moment. I can't wait to see where this goes in the next book. Especially after their unfinished moment at the end. It's gonna be so good...I can't wait.
FINAL THOUGHTS: Obviously, I loved this book a lot. I was kept entertained for pretty much the whole thing, except for the Echo part that was probably my least favorite. But otherwise, this was so good. I hope that the backstory with Adams and de Stoy is mentioned a little more, because that's definitely pretty interesting to me. I also want to see more connections made between Scarlett and Ty and the Syldrathi lineage. I kind of wondered for a minute, but I didn't think it would be true. But now things definitely add up. I hope that the squad gets back together and does more fun and crazy shit like they did at the beginning. The leash, specifically was so fucking funny. I think the humor and writing stepped up for this book, and I thought it was so good. I did keep saying, "he can't die he's on the cover" and I'm sure he's not dead...actually I'm not sure. I don't think anyone will die. I hope. But basically I had so much fun reading this, especially with the ships. The two new ones specifically are literally so great. I'M SO MAD I HAVE TO WAIT SO LONG UGH. This is terrible. I think I can get through it. Maybe. Hey, I did it with a bunch of other series so I guess it can't be all bad. But speaking of other series, I'm getting similar vibes with my emotions as I did when reading An Ember in the Ashes. That means good things. My expectations for the next book: Saedii and Tyler fall in love, Scarlett and Finian also fall in love. Maybe Zila finds love or I just get more of her. Then I'll be happy. <3
