Well, that was an epic cliffhanger. Did not love (not a cliffhanger fan). Also not feeling the time line (which was days, but felt like months). The travel breaks were much needed but the climax felt… not so climaxy. The twists were vaguely interesting but overall, more meh. It was fine, bar the “in the next book” ending.
Okay so first of all, that ending should be illegal. If you're considering starting the series, I'd urge you to wait until the last book is published as this cliffhanger is unbearable.
Cliffhanger warning aside, I found that this book did not suffer 'second book syndrome' and it is actually better than the first in a few ways! (And worse in one way too oops)
Better in the way that the action is non-stop. There is a lot going on but it feels very well paced (other than the Esh stuff... that was interesting, but slow) and we barely get a moment to breathe as the characters also barely get a moment to breathe.
I liked seeing everyone's relationships with one another change. For the better, for the worse, overall everything from this point on is different. I thought that was well done.
What I did not like was Kal and Auri's relationship. It was 0 to 100 and I didn't believe it. Me, the one who kinds likes insta-love, did not like it. Very sad but I can live with it.
Overall, I need the last book to really decide if this series is a standout or not. As it stands... it's kinda basic. Fun, entertaining, and hilarious, but not too memorable.
Below is my first impression review:

Um hello? Yes, I’d like a refund? My fucking heart has been ripped out and shit on by this book.
No can do?
Great.

I think this is one of those rare occasions when the sequel is much better than the preceding novel. I found myself just shy of held by the events in the novel, a nice change from the "I literally couldn't care less what happens right now" that I was feeling during [b:Aurora Rising|30075662|Aurora Rising (The Aurora Cycle, #1)|Amie Kaufman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1560056657l/30075662._SY75_.jpg|50493990]. I think that the characters have a lot more dimension now, almost like the first book was just a necessary evil to get the story going and now the characters are starting to actually become who they are supposed to be during this series.
The big plot twist didn't surprise me but I don't think it was done poorly.
I still had a hard time... caring. I really wasn't on the edge of my seat wondering if these characters would make it out alive and I think I should have been more worried considering the authors already made it quite clear that they are willing to kill characters off and have no loyalty to this team.

that ending omg. can't wait for the next one. don't know how i feel about tyler's...entanglements, especially if there's hope for cat. but there's tension so i approve.
also what's up with kal?? is that it??

This was good. Nothing about it has been entirely ground breaking, but it's just so solid. Definitely recommend it

Oh god oh god oh GOD. If nothing else this entire novel is worth the last ten pages. My heart has never beat faster in my life. While the first 70% of this novel could be described as mediocre yet enjoyable YA sci-fi, damn does the end murder you. I was lukewarm on the writing style, some of the characters, the plot line until this novel and now I’m burning and on complete fire — recommend this to anyone who read the first novel even if you’re questioning whether or not to pick this up, DO IT.

The fun part of the story starts 2/3 in. Everything else is slow and boring. The writing is still weird, too many parts of the story where I thought "Why are u saying this out loud" and sometimes I thought "Why are you thinking this". Narration is still a bit off in this book, possibly even getting worse than the last book.
But I still held on, because I like Kal and Auri, and I was hoping Tyler got up to something fun, and Zila finally got some backstory, and sometimes Finn does make me chuckle. And honestly, I hope Scarlett just stays the f out of my way.
They did a disservice to Kal, they all know it but for plot reasons, they must have a break-up in the third act, whatever.
Warning: This book ends on a cliffhanger! As all second books in trilogies do.
Characters (By Preference)
+ Kal: my beloved, you did nothing wrong.(except maybe being a little creepy, a little TOO obsessed with your gf. but I get it)
+ Auri: good start, bad end. Now I know why the third book is called Aurora's Ending.
~ Zila: I can never remember she is there, or what her name is. In this book she kinda grew on me, but not a lot.
~ Tyler: Mmmmehhhhhh.
- Finn: He was one of my favorites last book, but here, he is just pining after Scarlett, b o r i n g.
- Scarlett: If I ever see this woman in the street, it's on.
