Thoroughly enjoyable. Stiefvater is simply not capabIe of writing a novel that isn't. I'm glad that the story had a fantastic element to it in the sweetwater because the only (truly the only) thing that I can say against this book is that I think the pressure for historical detail/research dampened Stiefvater's usual magical prose. Were it not for the infection of a sentient water running through the walls of the hotel, there mightn't have been quite enough to fully immerse me in this story. Though I enjoyed June's character, the rest fell flatter than what I've come to expect from this author, not carrying that trademark quirkiness I love in the later Raven Boys novels and spinoffs and All the Crooked Saints. So really, the lost star is only because of how much I respect this author's talent that she's doomed to being compared to...herself. This book is marvellous! This book is unique! This book will make you want to be constantly shadowed by three dachshunds and wear wide leg trousers with Mary Janes and EMBODY June Hudson, hero of high achieving yet deeply feeling women everywhere.

Very interesting twist on a real event. The water was such a cool concept I wish there was more about it. I got a bit lost in the names of all the characters and I wish the love story was better developed but overall very enjoyable

This is not a bad book. I enjoyed reading it but my emotions are complicated.
What I liked about it:
The writing style. Maggie Stiefvater is an absolute master when it comes to crafting poetic lines tucked between character studies and weird humour. As someone who grew up with her YA writing and enjoys said writing even as an adult (which usually doesn't happen, her books are just that timeless) I can say her style works amazing when it comes to adult fiction.
The book is delightfully weird and atmospheric and a bit pretentious in a way that doesn't bother me. It's very subtle in it's themes but packs a punch between lines. This is where it gets disappointing tho.
What I didn't like:
This book is all over the place. The themes it tries to explore fall flat most of the time and get lost between weird pacing only to get picked up in the last 50 pages of the book.
I'd love to hear more about the staff and their moral dilemmas serving Nazis. I wanna dive deeper in the exploration of class between our two protagonists and how mental illness and autism interact with magical realism as a whole. Reading this book was like having dangled the most luscious themes one could want from a book in front of ones nose only to never get them. Everything just fell flat.
Maybe this book could have used more pages, different narration or a shift of focus but I always wished for more reading it.
