”But I, L, do in fact exist. So come on! Kill me if you can! What are you waiting for?”

I read this manga years ago, watched the anime plenty of times between then and now. This is the one story that I would not trade anything for.

Re-reading this in a book is so different compared to reading it on a screen. The ink stands out and the art is breathtaking. I noticed the expressions of the characters more than I ever had, and reading it is a completely different experience to watching the anime. Now the anime is a god damn master piece. But the manga is a museum artwork.

Every time I re-watch or re-read Death Note, especially the beginning, it shakes me even more because I’m stunned with the parallels and contrasts. I think more and more about the characters and the ‘what if’ scenarios.

The first two volumes are basically the genesis of Light and L, and you’re racked with the moral dilemma and the intensity of their tension. But that doesn’t mean that it’s not action packed and fast paced. I think the first two volumes are my favourite out of the whole series, because the moment L declared himself in chapter 2 was when I knew this would be good. And it turned out it was.

*also, I would like to add, that the black edition is gorgeous.*

I absolutely love Death Note. I'm about 15 episodes into the anime, and I took a break to read the manga. Unfortunately, getting through the first two installations presented in Vol. 1 of the Black Edition didn't even get me to where I currently am in the story in the anime, so I didn't really get anything new out of the story. Still, it was fun going through story again. I love the intellectual chess game between Light and L.

The anime follows the manga very closely, so they're almost identical in terms of content. I'd say it's more of a preference of whether you want to read it or watch it. Reading it is quicker, but it's also fun to listen to the Japanese voice acting in the anime.

4.5 stars!
cw: violence, murder, suicide

Omg this was INCREDIBLE! This got me out of my reading slump because it was so interesting, complex, fast-paced and action packed. It's super dark, twisted and thought-provoking and I loved it. I did have a few problems with it which is why I am rating it 4.5 instead of 5 (e.g. some lines containing misogyny).

I am SO excited to continue on with the series ahhh!!!

Re-reading the series a decade later. Fantastic. As good as I remember!
