It all starts with a bus crash and a mysterious military base.

  •  Who doesn't love a good countdown trope? As the reveal grew nearer and nearer, I couldn't help but read furiously to discover what it was.
  •  A perfect winter read! Set in South Dakota, it is plenty cold. could feel the chill through the pages.
  •  Child has a way of "naming" characters without giving them a name, which I admire and respect. Not easy to do.
  •  We see Reacher have some rare moments of vulnerability. Gives some more insight into his character and values.

Fancy literature it is not, but it is super efficient entertainment. Your superhero protagonist gets himself embroiled in a situation; something fishy going on somewhere in the middle of nowhere, and from then on its just an action movie rolling along (without the too long fight or car chase scenes). That's it! But it's cleverly constructed, and did I mention entertaining?!

SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Maybe, but just in case)

I like Reacher but This was not my favorite Reacher novel. It was slower paced than a lot of Reacher books -- more about solving a mystery than getting revenge. I thought there were a lot of problems with the story in general.

First, how many elderly people would go on a bus tour of the upper Midwest in the middle of winter, cheaper rates or not. Maybe some but the ones I know, the first thing they would be talking about was the chance the weather would be too cold, because every elderly person I know is always freezing anyway, much less in the middle of a snow storm in South Dakota.

Two, I thought Reacher did some dumb stuff in the book, like going off with the police instead of staying behind to protect the woman he was worried about. (I know why the author did it, to give us clues, but I had already figured out who it was way before then anyway)

Third, not enough action. Too much repetitive description of the cold and the snow.

Fourth, incomplete ending. If it had been my first Reacher novel, I may have thought it better, but now I have certain standards and expectations of Reacher, and I thought he and the book fell a little short. But, still worth reading just because I love Reacher. He is such a simple yet extremely complex character.

Wtf was the ending about

Excellent suspense!
