3.9 AVERAGE

A pretty good Jack Reacher story - I was close to giving it 5 stars. 2 things prevented it (see spoilers). Reacher hitches a ride on a tour bus headed for Mt. Rushmore in the dead of winter. The bus crashes, and of course the town Reacher ends up in has some strange things going on. The main thing is the blizzard. It's cold! The roads in and out of town are closed, and Reacher is trapped in town with the bad guys. Or, as things usually end up, the bad guys are trapped in town with Reacher.

The tension is good, there's a lot of action, and things keep moving. I didn't mind the constant reminders about the ticking clock, but I know others have commented on them being a big distraction. Definitely above average in the Reacher-verse.

Spoiler 1. They killed the old lady. I liked her, but I also hate when they spend the first 75% of the book trying to save someone, and then they die anyway. 2. Total cliffhanger at the end.

I have done a lot a Reacher reading this summer. The switch, early on in the series, to first person was a little jarring and then the return to third person was welcomed. Now, I like both approaches and they add a nice degree of variability to the series.

61 Hours is a good Reacher book. Our hero has ceased being the best of everyone. In this book he doesn't win eveything, he is stopped being the superhero he became and is back to being the hero. He makes mistakes and rectifies them. He has doubts and overcomes them.

The ticking clock device is good. It builds towards the conclusion nicely however, as a ticking clock it doesn't specify what the event will be - this robs it a little of the impact. Is it an explosion? A murder? Reacher's death? We don't know and some of emotional impact is lost.

However, after the nuclear bomb book (its all I can call it now) the last two (inc this one) have returned to form.

If you like Reacher, you'll like this. If you don't, you'll have stopped reading the series a long time ago.

While 61 Hours was suspenseful and kept me continually interested, I didn't love the book. I'm not crazy about Jack Reacher, and there wasn't any character that fully captured my sympathy. The plot had a few holes for me, and I didn't like at all where things ended up. I read this book in the first place because I liked the "Jack Reacher" movie that came out a couple of years ago, but I doubt I'll read more in the series.

Set in South Dakota, my home state, this was a must-read. I love Jack Reacher and how he kicks ass. He blows into town with a snowstorm and helps the local cops deal with a biker/meth gang. Good plot, good details, but I was mad at the end when Reacher's fate was left up in the air.

As usual I love the Jack Reacher. This book started a bit slow for me and was a little different than the usual, hence not the usual 5 stars. Excited for the second book this year to come out in October.

This is the second Reacher book I've read after Child's debut novel The Killing Floor and my review probably wouldn't stray too far from that one. Needlessly long in spots, eye roll-inducing in others but still breezy, fun and occasionally subversive of its genre.
