Loved this book! I did find the first 1/4 a bit slow and hard to sink into, but once the narrative perspective started shifting it really picked up speed and I couldn’t put it down!
Strong character development, nuanced social commentary and great story telling.
Loved the themes on identity, theatre and the masks we wear: motherhood, race, class, gender. All blending into one big soup about belonging, duty and family.
Recommend!

Hmmm... I think I would probably give this a 3.5. I thought this was a great story, loved the characters and loved the topics it tackled, but kinda wish there was more focus on Desiree and Stella rather than their daughters which is pretty much what the entire second half of the book focused on. Felt like something was missing for me towards the end.

I read this for school and I’m genuinely so surprised by how good this book is? Like not only for a school book, but also more generally! It portrays so many complicated but also very important themes like racism, colorism, sisterhood and family in a way that feels at times heartwarming but also at times just makes you want to cry because the pain that is described just feels to real and just connects with you in the best way possible. Very complex but also realistic characters that I found really compelling, especially the way how their experiences was a way of telling the reader about the unfairness and oppression that were prevalent in during this historical time period.
Overall very surprisingly a great read with a compelling storyline and very glad that I had to read this for school.
