In this family drama set in the 1990s, a young woman finds herself entangled with a trio of brothers and their messy family dynamics. The book spans almost a decade and reveals the complicated relationships within a family.

This book turned out to be such a pleasant surprise. At the start, I was skeptical. I felt the original romance to be rushed and underdeveloped. However, it soon revealed itself as a story about the intricate and complex relationships within a family. Each member of this family has his or her role which comes with secrets and resentments. Brothers compete for the affection and attention of an emotionally distant mother, and the young woman who stole the hearts of these brothers searches to find her place in the family. Secrets are kept until the discovery of a body in the church attic brings them to the surface.

I ended up loving this book. It’s beautifully written with evocative language and poignant observations on life. I became invested in the lives of these deeply developed characters. The ending was satisfying, but I was sorry to leave this family’s world.

If you enjoy complicated family drama with a focus on character development, you should read this book.

17 Year old Marley West is new in town and quickly finds herself seated at the Joseph family dinner table.
Marley goes from occasional dinner guest to integral member of the family as illness, secrets and years of unspoken words threaten to tear the family apart.

This was such an enjoyable read. The kind of book I looked forward to picking up. The family dynamic was beautiful and flawed and perfect in so many ways.

A fantastic coming of age story with twist and turns I never would’ve seen coming. Overall a great read!
