This family drama is set in the 90s with Marley coming to the small town and being drawn to the Joseph family. I really enjoy the complexity of the family dynamics and how Marley folded into the family.

The pacing was a little slow but I was intrigued with the storyline. Maria Liatus did a great job with the narration.

Thank you @celadonbooks @macmillan.audio for a copy of the audiobook.

I love a book with flawed characters and that was the Joseph family and Marley. They were all trying their best in their own ways to navigate through life, love, work etc… No one in this book was perfect- every single one of the characters needed to reckon with the fact that certain behaviors (often in how they expressed love) that they were raised to think were good were actually not. I liked at the end that we got different perspectives of the characters though I think Elise and Micks perspective were a bit on the weaker side…but maybe I was just hopeful that there perspectives would provide them with redemption that they did not have…

Really enjoyed this one. Loved the poetic style.

I loved this book very much

This slow burn family drama with a hint of a mystery is exactly what I needed when I decided to pick this up. I love a book that focuses on characters and their development over time and this did it wonderfully. If you are looking for something fast paced, this is not the book for you. But if you like characters that feel like real people that have real struggles, I would highly recommend this book.

DID NOT FINISH

Just once I would like to read a story about someone getting pregnant who has no business being a parent (i.e. a 17 year old) deciding to get an abortion. Or at the very least, the author actually uses the word "abortion" instead of referring to it vaguely as a "procedure".

I just love an Amy Jo Burns character build. I think this book could have used an editor with a heavier hand in a few knitpick-y spots, but it was a great read.

Family, love, loss, grief, despair, forgiveness, mystery, trouble… many adjectives and characteristics to describe this book. It’s something that you want to come back to in order to find out how the Joseph family dynamic affects all those involved.

“Head on straight, heart on straight”.
Wow, what a stunning novel. I could have easily read this in a day or two in terms of the storyline. However, I wanted to take my time with this one. The characters, the family, the business, the secrets!? I re-read quite a few paragraphs because this book just satisfies your craving for a good story. Some parts are so good you just have to read it a second time before you keep going. Books like these are rare to come across, I highly recommend!
