Phenomenal. This book really makes you think about what a family dynamic is and how all members of a family interact with each other. The book also focused on the relationship of a married couple and their struggles with each other and how that relationship coincides with a family. It was a really good book I recommend to anyone looking for something that makes you really think about how all of the characters think and feel about their family and the family dynamic.
My favorite quote was “She wanted Waylon, her husband, to want her. …like he had when he felt he had nothing to lose because he’d already spent every emotion, every bead of sweat, every tendon on her. Like he had to make it count for a thousand nights, like he could never get enough.” I felt the longing for love and want to be noticed by her husband. The desperation to feel that passion they had in the beginning of their marriage, I felt it deeply. The author really had. Away of making you feel the pain and longing of the main character.

In Mercury by Amy Jo Burns, the bonds of family are put to the test in a blue-collar town where secrets lie buried beneath the surface. Marley West's arrival in Mercury in 1990 sets off a chain of events that will forever alter the lives of the Joseph brothers and the town itself.
Burns masterfully crafts a narrative that explores the complexities of loyalty and belonging against the backdrop of a struggling roofing family. This novel delves deep into the complexities of family dynamics, exploring the age-old tension between blood ties and the families we create for ourselves.
Marley's journey from a loner seeking connection to the linchpin of the Joseph brothers' makeshift family is both heartwarming and heartbreaking to witness. As the Joseph brothers grapple with their own demons and the weight of their family's legacy, Marley becomes their guiding light, navigating them through the storms of life.
The discovery of a long-hidden secret in the church attic serves as a catalyst for the unraveling of the Joseph family's carefully constructed facade. As old wounds resurface, Burns deftly explores themes of forgiveness and redemption, forcing her characters to confront their pasts so they can build a different future.
At its core, Mercury is a testament to the power of love and resilience in the face of adversity. The prose is beautifully absorbing, drawing readers into the heart of Mercury and its inhabitants. By the end of the novel, I found myself deeply invested in the fates of Marley and the rest of the Josephs, rooting for them every step of the way.
Mercury is a beautifully crafted tale of family, forgiveness, and the enduring bonds that hold us together. Amy Jo Burns has delivered a poignant and unforgettable novel and I look forward to reading more from her (like Shiner currently sitting in my TBR pile)!

Wanted to like this family saga more. Definitely a character-driven book, but I couldn't really get invested in any of the characters. Some jumping back and forth in time was a bit jarring. Still...well written, and I hung in there till the end.
