This was my first Kandi Steiner book. I will continue to read this series mostly because I have a slight perfectionist tendency and can't fathom reading out-of-order or skipping a book in a series and I quite want to get to book #3 based on some quotes and blurbs I've read (so far, I'm meh on book #2).
Anyways, this book was fine. First, one of the tropes I’ve seen connected to this book is enemies-to-lovers, which I’d say is a stretch. Mild dislike-to-lovers is probably more accurate. Otherwise, this is a typical romance book set in the professional hockey world. I felt like it could have been shaved down a little bit, it seemed a touch long all things considered. For two adults, I felt like communication tended to be a big problem between the two. Maven obviously had unresolved issues from her past relationship and Vince was a bit immature. I didn't feel overly connected to either character which made it hard to appreciate their faults as part of the story (and probably why I thought it felt long too).
Overall I liked the read. I wouldn't say I disliked it enough to only rate it a two but not sure it's quite a three. If you like a romance set in the hockey world and don't want anything particularly thought-provoking, this is an acceptable choice. I've started book #2 and am a little discouraged at the length so I'm hoping unnecessary length isn't typical of this author. If so, I'll probably start skimming at some point.

a sports romance/workplace romance with forced proximity, a snobby hippie and a reformed playboy! a very unlikely couple, but the sexual tension runs rampant lol
i immediately loved the set up of the hockey team and meeting all of the new characters that i know we will get to read more about in future books. one thing i love about sports romances is the instant found family feelings you get from the group! the team dynamics in sports romances are what i look forward to most!
the spice was great (iykyk

“Vince Tanev was on his f***ing knees for me. There was no thought more erotic than that one.”
This was my first Kandi Steiner, and I now get the hype!!!
If you've read any of my reviews, you know I am a SUCKER for a hockey romance, & this one changes nothing in that regard lol!
Vince & Maven are not exactly "enemies", but she is not a fan of his & her preconceived (experienced) idea of him & other athletes/the upper class. When a job assignment brings them into forced proximity (yasss), the tension between them is top notch! PS: the spice is spicing in this one! PHEWWWW
Maven seeing and learning all the different facets of Vince, and Vince proving to Maven that not all athletes/the upper class families are as horrible as her ex & his family is such a rollercoaster ride! They push, pull, fight, try to make the other jealous, & finally face their feelings for the other. FINALLY! lol
Loved this one, and the audio (duet! PRAISE), and I will be finishing book 2 ASAP!

Mr. King, we're ready for you!
This is Kandi's first entry into the hockey world, but she has never steered me wrong when it comes to sports romance, and she DID NOT DISAPPOINT in the slightest with this one. When an unexpected meeting at a social event creates a bit of a buzz, Maven gets the opportunity of a lifetime to shadow the hottest new star in hockey.
Vince Tanev is everything that bothers Maven King. He's cocky, arrogant, and thinks everything is at his disposal. And let's not forget mouth-wateringly GORGEOUS. While Maven King is #girlgoals, she's smart, quick-witted, ambitious, and takes no crap from anyone. And she brings Vince to his knees, literally
Their close proximity, snarky banter, and chemistry make this book fly by. Vince is tenacious in trying to win over Maven's heart, and I was all here for it! The supporting characters are addicting and make me itch to get my hands on the books to come. The thing I treasure most about this author's books is her ability to make my reader's heart feel every emotion. Perfect introduction to a new series and deserves all the stars!

The one thing in this book that irked me was them telling each other one thing and then wanting them to do another but getting mad when they did what they were told??? The beginning was a lot of spitefulness and I think that rubbed me wrong because it felt too childish. BUT despite all of that, I did think their story was cute, especially the farther in it got and Maven’s emotional growth was good too.
