I have been reading these recently, listening to them really, whilst doing data entry at work. They're easy to follow, entertaining, and don't take all that much thought. I have been listening to a few YA / middle grade series actually. So far I have not had an issue with any of these books; they're a little convoluted, but otherwise fine, and given that I'm not a child, and therefore not the target audience, I have been pretty happy just to plod my way through them and not really think about it too much.

However, I have a really massive problem with some of the content of this book. Not to be too extreme, but I am surprised this made it past editing and into publication, and is not something I have heard anyone comment on before [spoilers ahead] but one of the ADULT characters in this book kisses the MC. A CHILD.

I was kind of aware that that happened, I had read it on Wikipedia I think, but from the way it had been phrased there I assumed they went back in time to when Holly was a teenager, and actual teenager Holly kissed Artemis. I was not prepared for technically-a-teenager-but-has-all-her-memories-and-is-aware-he-is-a-child Holly to kiss Artemis. Honestly I think it's kind of appalling. Obviously the children, who are the target audience for this book, reading may not realise how problematic it is. But I'm not a child, and I do realise. It is tantamount to grooming, and it seems to introduce the idea that an adult is allowed to be attracted to a child, and it's ok, because magically she was younger when they kissed. I am just really so shocked that this plot-line made it to print. I will not be finishing out this series.

This is not an attack on Eoin Colfer, I know nothing about him and have not read any other books by him [other than this series I mean.] Given when these were first published I think this is just a case of attitudes towards things changing, I am in my 20s, and even when I was working as a bartender we were having training on how we could prevent child s**ual exploitation: it is a very important topic in the UK and has been for the last few years especially, and I do not think a book like this would make it through editing now.

This is one of the best books in the series. It has good twists and only picked up with one new element from the previous book leaving lots of options open for the future.

A real flex of Colfers skills in foreshadowing and creating fun puzzle boxes that payoff very well at the end.
