Such an amazing and beautiful story. Julie (Queenie) and Maddie form a close friendship during their dangerous World War II years, and as they alternate the telling of the story, it is slowly revealed just how brave and special both of these young women are. I listened to the audio version, and while it was a little confusing at first with all the names thrown out, hearing the Scottish burr and the British lilt of Molvin Christie's and Lucy Gaskell's voices added a wonderful element to the story. The writing is superb, and the characters will get into your heart.

THIS BOOK. THIS AMAZING, HEART-BREAKING BOOK!!
I can't give you many details because it would really ruin the experience for you. JUST GO READ IT! And bring a bunch of tissues, because it is incredibly brutal. There are so many gems about friendship and love. Ah, I'm getting even more teared up just thinking about it!
What are you waiting here for? Go read it!! ^_^

Undeniably excellent. Will make you bawl like a baby. I am wrecked from finishing this.
I found it difficult to get into, but it really picks up the pace around halfway through. Properly feminist, with a large cast of truly badass and believably flawed female characters. But perhaps my favorite aspect of this book is the twists; I love a story about a good liar. I also found it thoroughly interesting how the author made the antagonists fully fleshed out characters so that you feel sympathy for them. So well-written.

I know a lot of people love this book, but sometimes it's really hard for me to follow plots, and I really don't get it. It's really a shame, since I love the writing, and it's supposed to have a great plot, but I just don't understand all that's happening.

I typically do really enjoy historical fiction novels when I read them, it’s just something I expect. I didn’t expect anything less of this book, but honestly I didn’t expect much more. Oh, how I was wrong. This book BLEW me away. I’m struggling to even put into words how much I loved this book.
At the root of this book we see an incredibly complex character and one of the most beautiful female friendships of all time. The root of this book is great. What Elizabeth Wein does with that root, how she expands it and structures and fleshes out this narrative, takes this book to a category all of its own.
This is a book that I would recommend listening to on audiobook; however, it is important to note that there are a few (though not too many) multi-media aspects within the book that are not highlighted in the audiobook. I think this is worth it, but I feel like you should know what you’ll give up in order to experience this incredible experience audibly.
The narration is incredible, the writing is strong, the story telling is remarkable and unlike anything I’ve ever read before. HIGHLY, highly, hiiiiggghhhllllyy recommend. Best book I’ve read in such a long time (and the only one I've read in 1 sitting this year). Easily one of my favorites of the year.
