84/104 - 1924 - So Big by Edna Ferber
So good! It started out a little slow for me, but once I got into it, I couldn’t put it down. Edna Ferber is a master writer. She brings characters to life in a way that few writers can. This is the second book of hers that I have read, and it won’t be my last.

Yeah, it was good. Nothing special. I've been on a real slump so far this year, lol. I haven't read a really excellent book yet.

Slow to start. Loved the descriptions of life in Chicago in its earlier days. The book brings of the questions of what we do for our children and and is it worth it. The last 50 pages are the best! Plus I love any book about a school teacher named Selina.

Delightful book! For all the reasons in the many other reviews.
Good writing, fascinating characters and an underlying philosophy that is hard to forget, summed up in the oft cited quote about beauty in cabbages, that “Life had no weapons against a woman like that.”

приємна і мінлива книжка. те, що почалося як проста сентиментальна історія, згодом набуває нових вимірів, розгортається вшир і вглиб, так, що аж трохи дивує, куди цьому текстові вдається зайти за останні кількадесят сторінок.

I didn't know what to expect of this but I really liked it. I think I expected stuffier, but it is a good read about the Chicago area in the early 20th century. Mostly it follows one woman as she leaves Chicago for a truck farm, and how she never loses her spirit and always makes her own way. Recommended, especially if you have any connection to Chicago.

I adored the first 2/3s of this book. The struggle our protagonist goes through while never losing sight of the beauty around her was energizing. Her son, seduced by money loses sight of beauty and the story ends abruptly when he realizes what he has lost. The right reader will be engrossed in this book. Others will get bored with the cabbages.

So so good. Having my parents read it. Shout out for diversity of people that you interact with and shout out for real beauty. And hard work.

Just finished today and it really has me thinking about finding beauty in my day to day life. I loved Selina and reading about her struggles raising her son on a farm near Chicago in the early 1900s.

It almost seems as if Ferber wanted to protagonists. I enjoyed all the references to Chicago after having lived in the area. Her descriptions and metaphors were a definite plus to me.
