This book started out all over the place for me, I couldnt quite grasp what was going on, but as I settled into it after a few chapters I was so intrigued by the dang story line I couldnt wait to finish it. It was surprisingly a tad dark, which I appreciated, and as much as I wanted to like Cole, I felt weary and unsure of what kind of character he really was which I enjoyed not just falling for the bad boy. all in all good book, Ill get around to starting the second soon.

One word... AMAZING!!!!!
Just that, I loved all of the characters. Loved the unique spin on mythology, can't wait to get my hands on the next book :)
It's a definite recommend.

I'd give this 3.5 if I could.

Not thrilled with the writ g style but the book had a really good story line. Also the ending..... It did it's job let's just say that. Predictable but worked.

3.5-This genre requires some suspension of disbelief, as some of the situations are pretty crazy, but I think this is one of the better reimagings of the Greek myths that are a bit of a trend in YA right now. The author does a good job of conveying why Nikki behaves the way she does, girl has been through some tough times, and Jack has some very nice swoonworthy moments. I definitely felt her increasing sense of doom and I really liked that she told Jack what happened instead of evading it until the end of the book.

I think this would have actually worked better if these kids were not in high school, I just think the whole 'kid goes missing for six months' is way too big a deal to be a relatively minor plot detail. The aftermath would just be so major, and then for Jack to disappear too?

I quite enjoyed this book. It took me a little bit to get into the characters, but once I did I enjoyed the writing. The plot was a little predictable, but then it's based in myth. Very easy read, finished it in one sitting.

I have to start this review by saying that I have read this book before. I know that I have read it, but I didn’t remember any of the story while I was rereading (which is the whole reason I reread it). Everneath was a very run of the mill 2012 paranormal YA fantasy story. I think the concept was better than its execution, but for a debut novel, it could have been much worse. I don’t want to talk too negatively about this book because I had fun while I was reading it but there were definitely some issues.
The pacing was pretty good. Each chapter started with a certain about of time left until her ‘return.’ But there were also flashback chapters that counted down until when she first vanished. I thought this was a fun way to tell the story.
There were a few things that I thought could have been further explained when it came to the world-building. I understand that we only got to know as much as Nikki knew, but I still think there were certainly more opportunities to fill out the world. I was left with too many questions.
The love triangle was…weird. It wasn’t really a love triangle because it was clear who Nikki really cared about. It was a little annoying too with Cole constantly trying to tell Nikki that he loved her, but never really showed it. I liked all the characters well enough, but I think the best friend Jules could have been further developed. I’m hoping we will get that in the next books.
Finally, I wish the author had shown more than told. There were a few times within chapters where there were mini headings that stated the location. Times that could have been shown to us rather than told in this way. There were a handful of other parts of the story that were told when they could have been shown.
Overall, this was a book that I enjoyed despite the things I didn’t love. It was a pretty average read for me. I will continue the series because I own all three books and I’m still a bit curious as to how things will turn out for our stubborn little Nikki.

For a first-time novelist, Ms. Ashton did a wonderful job at keeping the narrative's pace going. The characters in Everneath - while not always likable - are relatable, for the most part, and the premise of the story is original enough to be enticing, yet familiar enough to be comfortable. Well, perhaps "comfortable" is the wrong word, for the story did push me out of my comfort zone some; the very rawness of the emotions expressed throughout the book caused some discomfort, but Ms. Ashton captured their essences excellently.

The two main characters, Nikki Beckett and Jack Caputo, are teens caught in a fight for their lives. The book opens rather confusingly, though, and we don't get introduced to Jack until several chapters later, although he plays a key role in the story. Throughout the book, I didn't really ever get a sense that I truly got to know Nikki, although through her narrative, I felt like I got to know Jack better. That would probably be the main reason this book got no higher than a 4/5; not being able to really describe the main character makes it difficult to know whether you can relate to her personally.

If you're looking for a quick read that will make time pass quickly, pick up a copy of Everneath and dive on in. :)

This was a great read. I thought I wasn't going to like this book a whole lot because it didn't seem interesting enough for me to love, but I ended up loving it. I was confused in the beginning and the date changing in between chapters but a little further into the book and it all starts to unfold and is easier to understand what happened in the beginning and all the events that led up to what happened to her.

- Nikki
I like Nikki's character. She is really smart, and a great main character. She wasn't irritating (only a little) but once she makes a decision there is no talking her out of it. She is strong, she doesn't let Cole push her around and make all the decisions for her. I would change, however, how she acted in the beginning. She acted like a whole different person than what we see in between chapters from the past. Although, I might be seeing this wrong because she was going for awhile and I don't know how I would have acted if I was in her position but I just wished she tried a little than what she gave us.

- Jack
I love Jack. He is so amazing, I cannot believe all that he has done for Nikki. He is amazing. I still cannot believe what he did, my eyes were tearing up the entire chapter. He is brave and he did something so unbelievably brave, he is just amazing.

- Cole
I did not like Cole at all. He is the worst character in the book in my opinion. Jack is so much better. Why can he not just leave her alone? I don't know why he even went into her life to begin with, he should have just left her alone.

Overall, I loved this book. I would have turned down the 5 stars to 4 because of Cole but I loved it so much to just overlook it. I am excited to get into the next book. I am also glad because now since we are caught up from her past there won't be flashback moments in the next book, I hope. This book was great, Jack has to come back, he just has to! The book played out very slowly, which usually annoys me, but I was entertained through it all.

Wow oh wow. What a fabulous story. It was better than I expected it to be. The plot was quite an interesting concept. It's kind of like the retelling of the myth of Persephone, which is one of my favorite stories!

Nikki has basically returned for the underworld, which is called the Everneath. She "returned" because she didn't want to stay away from her love, Jack. Because she is meant to stay in the Everneath, she only has a limited time to immerse herself back into her old world. The Everneath will come after six months to take her back.

It's quite a predicament she gets herself into, because for a while, Nikki does absolutely nothing in regards to Jack, so I'm wondering why the heck she even bothered. It was almost like she enjoyed torturing herself, but remaining around him -- but not being with him. She didn't even really engage in conversation with him, until he put in her a position to. So, for a majority of the book, Nikki pissed me off.

Then there's Cole -- the asshole we all know and hate. Cole is the reason why Nikki is involved in this whole Everneath experience to begin with. And he's so unapologetic for everything he puts her through. He clearly witnesses how much Nikki loves Jack, but he tries to cut her off at every turn. I personally think it's jealousy due to love, but that isn't necessarily specified because it is understood that Cole can't feel love.

Throughout the entire book, I'm naturally rooting for Nikki and Jack to just be together. I want her to be honest with him and I want him to just protect her against Cole, who just continues to act so petty. There's an underlying reason why Cole wants Nikki. He wants to take over ruling the underworld and feels that Nikki is very crucial in making that happen because she's so powerful.

I really enjoyed Jack's character, but I honestly think he was underplayed. I would have loved to hear more about his backstory, especially more on his experience after Nikki left him (for the Everneath). I feel like there's a hidden gem in his backstory.

Nikki's character was a little flat for me, mainly because she kept letting Cole take the reins on how she was going to spend her six months in her old life. Cole dominated Nikki's everything and it got annoying, fast. But I have a feeling that due to the happenings at the end of the book, Nikki will be back and ready for action. I think book one's happenings will force her to get a better head in the game.

Cole's character does everything I needed it to do -- make me hate him. He was so underhanded in his handling of Nikki, of his own affairs. Of everything. I don't trust him as far as I can throw him, so I'm interested to see what happens with him.

Overall, I was pleased with the book. The ending was such a cliffhanger for me that I NEED to pick up the second book now! I need to know what Nikki's plan of action is.
