sans doute ma pièce préférée entre toute, découverte en seconde. Je n'arrête pas de lire et re-lire le texte depuis.

A perfect ode to the teenage spirit.

Reading Rush Book #5

I've read this a few times already and I have no idea if Anouilh has written anything else besides this retelling but I'm definitely going to check now, I love his writing.
tense fast-paced
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

THIS IS SO FUCKING GOOD. definitely my favorite play I've read so far. the dialogue between creon and antigone about what it means to be happy reminded me so much of when I would get into heated debates with my therapist on why I should stay alive back when I was 17 that I had to actively pace around to calm myself down. also fun fact while I was reading this i was also eating spaghetti and meatballs and when they talked abt polynices' rotting body i had to stop eating.

4.5!!!!!! honestly wow! everything was so good!!!!!!!!!! i loved this a lot

ok so this is basically everything i actually would want in a play? (given that i havent read a whole lot of plays thats admittedly not the most informed decision.) like the writing is just so lovely and poetic but it never escalates to the point where its some abstract level of 'what the hell is going on', its very accessible and wonderfully written. also the inevitable fate thats lampshaded from the beginning??

and antigone is such a wonderful character!! shes so flawed but so relatable, shes just this girl, not very old, whos full of emotions and passions who cares about her brother even tho he wasnt that great because hes her brother and she cares so fiercely abt those she loves (the note to haemon at the end :c). like you know this is tragic (its an adaptation of a play that is Known) you know its gonna be fucked up from the beginning and you cant do anything about it but just watch it play out. honestly all the characters are important and the sense of inevitability and just !!! its not some romanticised thing like this is what the gods wish, be honourable, blabla but its still gotta happen. anyway. wow
challenging dark fast-paced
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: No
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

A very odd book. Studied this at uni and with some further reading, context and seminar discussion it IS quite interesting. Deliberately ambiguous whether this is a pro/anti fascist retelling of the original Greek tragedy. Definitely not something I would read for pleasure, and don't think I particularly liked it or agreed with Anouilh, but is interesting to read in it's historical context.

"Tragedy is restful; and the reason is that hope, that foul, deceitful thing, has no part in it. There isn't any hope. You're trapped. The whole sky has fallen on you, and all you can do about it is to shout.
Don't mistake me: I said 'shout': I did not say groan, whimper, complain. That, you cannot do. But you can shout aloud; you can get all those things said that you never thought you'd be able to say."

and

"The play is on. Antigone has been caught. For the first time in her life, little Antigone is going to be able to be herself."

and finally

"Antigone is calm tonight, and we shall never know the name of the fever that consumed her. She has played her part."
