A Little Hope

This book is beautifully written and, while sad and heart breaking, so touching. It dragged on a bit for me in the middle, because it’s a lot of reflection on characters thoughts with not a ton of action. But that’s okay, it’s exactly what it’s supposed to be. I loved the ending.

A LITTLE HOPE by Ethan Joella has been sitting on my shelf for too long, so I prioritized it this month and I'm so glad that I did!

Spanning the course of a year, the novel follows close to a dozen characters, all from the same small Connecticut town, with intersecting narratives. At the beginning, I feared there may be too many characters to follow, but they're woven seamlessly throughout the novel in such an organic way that it was easy to follow each story thread.

Each character is dealing with what life throws at them and is striving for personal growth. Progress is not constant, but the sense of hope always flickers. I did find myself leaning into Freddie & Greg's journey more than the others, but I was empathetic to all. I could understand how some had lost their way and were trying to fight their way back.

I really liked this one. Each chapter a different character, loosely related—the owner of the dry cleaners, her seamstress, the seamstress’ husband, his boss, etc. Each chapter jumps forward in time. You get an inside view of each persons fears and hopes. You see how much they want to connect, and when they miss. Really special.

A lovely, beautifully written book about the grief and connection intersecting the lives of ordinary people in a small community. My biggest qualm (and it’s pretty small) was that it takes place in Connecticut but felt like a totally different state.
