Twenty years in the past, Tara disappeared in the Outwoods without a trace. Though the police strongly suspected her boyfriend, Richie, had something to do with this disappearance, they were unable to make anything stick and everyone somewhat moves on with their lives. That is until Tara reappears, claiming that she's been with the fairies for only six months.
The story is told from multiple points of view, both skeptical of Tara's fairy story and some surprising believers. It was also clearly a guy's story, more than a woman's story, despite the "fairy" references. It was pretty crude, and rather unapologetic about it.
The only part that I honestly disliked was that the characters weren't very likeable. But honestly the open-endedness of the story really almost made up for that!

After reading tons of books about teens and fairies and abductions, it was interesting to read an adult book on the same topic - but w/a skeptical side to it. I still believed her but I was less inclined to feel like everyone else around her should believe in her story. Very compelling.
absolutely brilliant read. Centres around Peter and his sister who reappears after disappearing over twenty years ago at the age of 16. She doesn't seem to have aged one bit. Why? Where's she been? What has she been doing? The answer is a great fantasy read and a brilliant new author for me to explore.
This started out strong. Very strong. But in a reverse from my recent luck with books, it went sharply downhill around the middle. That's about where pornstar fairy shows up, Tara calls herself a "little frump", and a disturbingly high number of sexist comments begin showing up... all in the mouths of women, of course. It's alright if women say sexist things about women, that absolves the male author right? /sarcasm
Even had I been able to ignore all that, the plot begins unraveling quickly, as the author apparently runs out of things to say about the situation. The pseudo-psychobabble inserts from Underwood become more and more tedious, to the point where I found myself skimming them (not something I do).
The redeeming factors: The beginning. The story arc about Jack and Mrs. Larwood. Some parts of Peter & Richie's friendship. But for being a book ostensibly about a woman's story, the fully realized characters are rather overwhelmingly male...

A friend lent me this book and I couldn't have been more thrilled with it. Joyce tells the story of a family trying to come to terms with the reappearance of Tara, who disappeared twenty years ago, when she was only sixteen. The complication? She claims she was abducted by fairies.
The joy of this story is that it's told mostly from the point of view of her family, struggling to understand and adapt. Some chapters do cover the stories she tells of her disappearance and what happened on the other side, giving a lovely fantasy through-line to a story that is otherwise mostly about human connection and real life.
Beautiful, a little haunting, very lovely. Deep characters with real flaws but overall you are rooting for them, and a fantastic mystery that draws you through the entire book, right up to its satisfying conclusion.

A Fairy tale grounded in reality.
Wonderfully differently normal.
Many fantasies have the protagonist go from our world into a fantasy land.
Some Kind of Fairy Tale deals with the return journey.
