This book just make me appreciate Raikama more. I really want to hug her. Channi 😭. Vanna 🥺.
Her Radiant Curse served as Six Crimson Cranes (SCC) duology. However, this book was written in a manner that you can read it before or after SCC. I recommend to read after you finish the duology because Her Radiant Curse is about Raikama's past and how she become like what she was in SCC. Born as Channari in the Sundau - an island in the Tambu Isles- Channari or Channi was at first didn't have hideous face. Her face was normal until her sister, Vanna, born. Born with radiant light in her chest, Vanna's face is so beautiful she literally launched many ships from neighboring kingdom and royalties who want to be her suitor when Vanna reach 17 y.o. Desperate to save Channi and Vanna's mother from death, Channi's dad bring her to the witch named Angma who in turn curse Channi to has a face like snake while plan to devour Vanna 17 years later. That when the story begin to unfold.
Reading about Raikama in SCC, I never guess that she hide a sad pasts. Channi's childhood and teenage life was hard. She was shunned not only by her father but also the surrounding village. Lucky for Channi, Vanna is devoted to her and in return Channi will do everything in her power to prevent Angma from devouring her dear sister. I think at first Channi's devotion to Vanna and her determination was painful to read because this book written from Channi's first PoV therefore I didn't know what Vanna think and feel because Vanna is beautiful and seems spoiled at first. Yet, chapter by chapter, Lim show that Vanna herself also have her strength. If Channi was excel in melee combat and cooking, then Vanna show that her determination to bring Channi together despite Channi's hideous face may rivaled Channi. In some aspect, I think Vanna kinda like Shiori and maybe that's why Raikama love Shiori in her own way because Shiori reminded her of Vanna.
Story pace is fast and there's never a dull moment although the beginning of the book is medium pace. Just like SCC, Channi also have her own adventures but unlike the duology the timeline happen in a matter of week. In her journey, Channi will met friend and foe alike. One of them is Hokzuh, a dragon-demon hybrid who manage to catch Channi's heart but..well if you had read SCC duology you know what happen to them in the end. There was romance but only a little and not the story focus, also Lim emphasized that love come in many ways and Her Radiance Curse is more like sister love story between Channi and Vanna. My favorite character is Ukar, the snake who is Channi's best friend and since Channi also blessed by the late Serpent King whom happen to be Ukar's late father so they can communicated in their minds. Sharp and witty, Ukar often become Channi's voice of reason, similar to Shiori and Kiki. Especially since Channi sometimes act brash and reckless because of her hatred toward Angma.
Whether you had read SCC or not, Her Radiant Curse is a great addition to SCC series. I kinda read this book with dread because I had read SCC and know what happen to Raikama. Yet, I almost shed tears reading about sister bond between Channi and Vanna. Theirs is not a perfect example because even Channi have her jealousy moment toward Vanna, yet in the end her love and promise to always protect Vanna win in the end. Read Her Radiant Curse if you want to read about sisterhood that so strong its change so many people live complete with mesmerizing setting and characters that you will love or hate (I really hate Channi's dad and I'm glad Channi stand up for herself in the end).
