The perfect companion for both The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices series. The comments made by the characters were hilarious, and the art is beautiful.
I'm in love with Cassandra Jean's take on Clary's art.

I liked this book. It isn’t meant to be read like the other books, I skipped some chapters and then returned to them. I think it’s awesome a fantasy series has their own textbook!

I'm not going to lie.. this book wasn't on my radar until I saw the whole what order you should read Cassandra's books in. So that being said, I wasn't exactly sure what I was going to get before diving into this but I just knew it was going to be an information overload. It was but not in a completely horrible way.

For some reason, I thought it was kind of cool to learn about all these different things. The only thing that seems weird to me is to have it at the end of the reading list. Mostly because Simon is a vampire in this book.. but we know that he isn't a vampire anymore. So, yeah, it was weird to me because he's a shadowhunter now. I did, however, enjoy all the comments between Clary, Simon and Jace. They can definitely be funny without trying to be and the drawings were kind of cool too.

All in all, the Clave used to be completely horrible and now they are somewhat a bit better. Only somewhat though. They are still a bunch of assholes though. I also found it kind of interesting that if a werewolf has a kid they wouldn't necessarily be a werewolf. That I didn't know and found it to be kind of cool.

Also, I'm slightly obsessed with the Iron Sisters. I seriously want a book all about them. From the beginning to the end because they are just bad asses who terrify me. Please make a book because I will eat it all up.

In the end, I'm just more pumped for the next book to come out, [b:Chain of Iron|17699855|Chain of Iron (The Last Hours, #2)|Cassandra Clare|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1604591461l/17699855._SY75_.jpg|25129118]. Please hurry, I hate waiting.

Honestly, this stuff was kinda boring. Never thought I would ever rate a Cassandra Clare book 2 stars.

The book was written in the style of a non-fiction handbook (made sense, it was a codex). It was peppered with hand-written revisions by Clary, Simon, and Jace, and it was wonderful. It broke up the serious nature of the book with some well-needed humour (Simon's revisions were my favourite).

I absolutely loved "Clary's" artwork throughout the book too. It gave the codex a personal feel to it, which it should because the book was a replica of Clary's codex specifically. There were also quirky, funny references to modern culture
(like sensors not supporting flash)
but with a serious tone, and that is exactly my humour.

Furthermore, the way that Clare and Lewis intertwined legends with Shadowhunter lore was fantastic and well done. There were a lot of references to the Jewish faith (because of Simon maybe?) that I didn't understand but it was cool nonetheless. I did think it was a bit unfair that only women could enter the Iron Sisters' Citadel but oh well.

I basically loved this codex. It was a great way to refresh my memory of the Shadowhunters world and get back into it. I had issues with the Mortal Instruments series because the characters made stupid decisions in my view, but you can't go wrong with a codex! I'll now be reading the annotations in the LitJoy edition of The Mortal Instruments. Super exciting!

Side note: I read this alongside For The Emperor (Sandy Mitchell) and it had a similar vibe; there was a lot of world building with sporadic humour. The reason I loved this book but not that one was that I was invested in the Shadowhunter world, but not in the Warhammer world.

The best parts of the Codex were the funny notes and doodles from the characters. Some of the backstory and additional information was interesting, but some of it was definitely not, and I was bored through several parts. Overall, I'd only recommend it for diehard Shadowhunter fans that don't mind a textbook feel.

The book had a lot of information about the Shadow World, but got a tad bit boring after a while. I'm someone who'll curl up on the soda with a good book, so it was a little tedious at times. The only thing that really kept me going was Jace, Clary, and Simon. The author could've put in a bit more annotations. I mean when I annotate, I write a whole lot more. But maybe that's just me. You might not have the same thoughts as me if you're a reader who'll read like a chapter and stop. Overall, it was good, but I had higher expectations.

4.75⭐️I honestly had a lot of fun with this. I can appreciate the adobe flash player joke.

Really enjoyed all of the side notes by Clary, Jace and Simon wrote in! They added some nice humor. Also, LOVED all of Cassandra Jean's artwork as usual.

For the fans of the literary saga. Cute.
