REREAD 2017

Nudien uzsit excitement it kā lasītājs pats grasītos pievienoties shadowhunters rindām. :D

Awesome! Šo jau sen vajadzēja, pavisam cits skatpunkts uzreiz.

I don’t really feel like I should rate this book considering it’s just the Codex talked about throughout the shadowhunter books. It was nice to learn more about the shadow world that we may have not had a full explanation of in the books. It was entertaining (for the most part) and educational. It includes writing throughout the pages by Clary, Jace, and Simon which was really funny. Also, can I just say how beautiful this book is. If you own it, you’ll understand. Ugh probably the most beautiful book I own.

Completamente arrastado. Sei que é um livro extra e de apoio, mas pensei que seria mais interativo. Só os comentários e ilustrações dão um respiro do quão chato é o livro.

Este é realmente um livro de enfeite. Não agrega muito e é totalmente dispensável.

This was such an interesting companion novel, I hate when companion novels have the same name as something mentioned in the series but are something entirely different.
This wasn't the case and we get to see Clary, Jace and, Simon's banter in the margins, this version actually gets brought up later in the Welcome to Shadowhunter Academy short story series.

what a disappointment

guys i love worldbuilding, like i read both the twilight guide and the house of night handbook and came out with feelings (mostly of the wow, there is potential for interesting things in this series! shame the authors never ever touch on them). this book? this book is hecka dull

i am really only giving it the extra half star because rebecca guay's frontispiece is beautiful, that woman is ridiculously talented

anyways as i said. boring! the only thing that inspired the slightest deviation from apathy was when clare said that the figures of lilith and samael (or their equivalants) and demonology appear across christian, judaism, and islam

lemme school you a lil bit clare

those three religions are not the same! i know people like to assume calling them all the abrahamic religions means they're all basically like christianity aside from the jesus as god thing but that is incorrect!

there is no lilith in islam! at all! despite the shared adam and eve/temptation/down to earth structure the origins of humanity as described in islam contains significant differences to the bible story!

a few pro-tips:

- in the quran eve did not cause the fall. all that stuff with her being tempted by the serpent and subsequently leading adam into temptation? not there! they are equally responsible. this is an important thing since as i understand it, christianity has had some nasty traditions of misogyny following off this eve as the originator of sin story
- (on that note, the pain of pregnancy is therefore not a punishment for eve's choice. this has nothing to do with the shadowhunter's codex, i just remember reading that bit of the bible in my comparative religions class and just. wow. amazing how visible our religious differences are when you take two minutes to learn them!)
- no lilith!
- demons are not really a thing in islam the way they are in christianity. subsequently neither is demonology! what we have are jinn, creatures of fire, who like humans, have free will. consequently they can choose to be good or evil! the devil in islam is in fact a jinn who disobeyed god and was condemned to hell for it. fallen angels: incompatible with islamic theology!

these are some basic things that i, miss susan, an admittedly not great muslim who grew up in canada and only attended weekend quran school for about a year as a child am capable of telling you. they are in fact basic things wikipedia is equally capable of telling you! if you are writing a text which purports to be by a supposedly multinational organization who have revised said text for accuracy multiple times possibly it would behoove you to spend a couple hours on the internet to make sure you don't write things which make it obvious you are basing it all off the top of your head and a couple of movies you've watched? just an idea. 1.5 stars

My first ever one star rating. Its just, I don't get why this book came out when literally the world is expanding since there are many books coming still. What, a NEW Codex will come out 10 years from now or smthing? Its a guide, its supposed to have all the details about the Shadow World but instead I encountered "unknown","mystery","unanswered". Like seriously, it annoys tf out of me and literally 90% of this book includes all the knowledge that we learned while reading the novels. Also, there are so many inconsistencies in the details and the side remarks of Clary,Simon and Jace are unnecessary (they said its funny, but no I find it irrelevant instead). To think that I was about to buy the most expensive version of this, Thank God.
