Very fun and interesting addition to the shadowhunter chronicles.
Perfect for fans of shadowhunters who want to get all the little bits of information possible.

This isn't something I can write an actual review for, as it's a guidebook and fun addition rather than an actual novel. If you are a fan of Cassandra Clare's books, especially TMI, then obviously you should read this (I recommend physical rather than e-book, I can't imagine the artwork and side notes come off as well in a digital version), and if you're not a fan then there is absolutely no reason for you to read this review, let alone the Codex. While there isn't a ton of information in here that you couldn't get from reading the actual novels, there's still some interesting history and well-organized facts for people who want some clarification or just enjoy getting heavily invested in the worlds their favorite books come out of. Oh, and the "handwritten" notes from Clary, Jace, and Simon are an awesome touch that almost make up for me having to wait until March for the last TMI book.

It's hard to really say something about this book. It felt like reading encyclopaedia and surprisingly in this case it was a good thing. Although I don't usually ever read them, I really liked the change and it felt super nice and comforting to get to know the world I love even better.
As I said this was a really awesome thing, but I wouldn't recommend it to non TSC fans (if you don't know what TSC is, it means this book probably isn't for you.)

3.5 stars.
It was alright but there were quite a few things that annoyed me. Firstly the book seems rather flippant and not very serious. If it was more serious it probably wouldn't be as easy a read but it is supposed to be the shadowhunter bible so I feel it should have a more serious tone. Secondly the order of stuff was sometimes a bit odd. Like why wasn't the section on the inquisitor with the section on the consul? And lastly, the one thing that majorly pissed me of was that I have apparently been pronouncing stele wrong. Cassandra Clare, if you want something to be pronounced differently to how it is spelt, tell us in city of bones! Not in a book that came out way later than that!!
All in all, I did enjoy learning about the history but not a favourite read, and definitely not a favourite from the shadowhunter books.

This book was a nice addition to the shadow Hunter books - a lot of this I already knew from reading the other books, but it was a nice addition none the less!

I love the fact Clary, Jace and Simon wrote notes over most of the pages and had little conversations with each other - it made reading this more enjoyable.

This was an informative book with tons of beautiful illustrations and funny comments from beloved characters scattered throughout. However, if this is of any interest to you, do not read the ebook version because it does not differentiate between the comments from the characters and the actual text.
