*some mild spoilers but like do you really care about being spoiled for this book probably not*
This was okay! It definitely wasn’t the most exciting read, but honestly, what did I expect? There were some parts that were pretty entertaining, and the annotations for Jace, Clary, and Simon helped make it a little more interesting.
Overall it was pretty boring, though. I don’t really know how it could have been made more interesting, but I feel like that’s kind of the point? Like it’s this book that you HAVE to read in order to become a Shadowhunter, of course that isn’t gonna be a fun read for anyone in that situation.
My favourite section was when they had to rank their abilities, and to be an expert at investigating crime scenes you have to be able to do it blindfolded?! Shadowhunters are weird man.
Probably wouldn’t recommend this for the average fan, but if you’re like me and feel like you have to have every piece of content that is out there, then I would say give it a read, but don’t expect too much entertainment

I was really excited to learn that this book was coming out, because I love both The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices series. I was so happy to get it as a gift for Christmas! I started reading it immediately and just devoured it!
I loved learning more about the Shadowhunter world and it really added to what you learn through the TMI and TID series. What was my favorite thing about this book though were the notes written in by Clary, Simon, and Jace. It just added to the overall feel of the book and it was hilarious to see them having conversations in the margins. The artwork in the book as well is just gorgeous. Both the artwork that is supposed to be part of the Codex and Clary’s artwork. It was such a great touch to see Clary’s doodles throughout the book.
If you’re a fan of The Mortal Instruments you’ll love this book.

This book did exactly what it set out to do. It provided an overview of Shadowhunters' culture and their beliefs as well as their origins. I liked it for what it was but would only recommend reading it if you are into the Shadowhunter world.
Another cool addition to the shadowhunter collection, like an infographic into the world. Similar to the Harry Potter extras, it follows the transcribed notes format, with Clary, Simon, and Jace's notes and commentary all over the book. It also has some cool illustrations from the "authors" and Clary. An encyclopaedia into the shadow world, it's ideal for getting facts straight or for anyone curious about the history of shadowhunters.
slow-paced
I actually liked this more than I thought I would. It was really interesting to learn in depth about the shadow world and it will be great to have all this knowledge when I read the shadowhunter series. And I loved all the comments made by Clary, Jace and Simon, they were hilarious.
3.5 stars. It's a field guide to Shadowhunter-ing with comments in the margin from Jace, Clary, and Simon, which was a lot of fun. There's also a lot of gorgeous art inside between the official Codex art and Clary's doodles. If you like the Shadow World, it's worth checking out.
I have no idea how to rate this, to be quite honest. It was enjoyable for the most part, but it did get pretty dry in places. Dry to the point where I'd read five pages and fall the fuck asleep. At 10 am. There were times where it tried to read like a textbook but didn't at all, and it was pretty jarring, and not in a good way.
This does have me wishing for some sort of spinoff where we learn more about the Silent Brothers and the Iron Sisters though. Those two groups are cool as fuck.
Again, no idea how to rate this damn thing. It's like trying to rate an actual history textbook.
