There are a few good things about this book, the best probably is the altering POV, which allow you to hear the story from all the parties so you know how all of them think and feel. The problems with this book are as follows:

1) Most of the characters are not really likable (I seem to be running into novels lately where one or more characters are petulant) save for Trent but then did not have a huge role in this novel.

2) I'm really disappointed by Trent's performance in the case. I suppose he should be extremely intelligent given his track record. Yet, the case seemed just to unfold himself rather than him actively trying to solve the case.

3) Trent's relationship with Angie. I like strong female characters but Angie didn't come across as a strong feminine character. In fact, I think she is just there to mess up Trent, which is a pity because she has all the elements necessary for a great heroine.

Overall, I still like this book a lot, especially the part involving John Shelley. (The fact that Shelley is probably my favorite character in the book tells you just exactly how problematic characterization is in this book). I probably will try another book before delivering a verdict on this series, and hopefully Trent will prove his brilliance in the nest book.

Face paced, witty detective, twice had to go back and reread sections because of a well placed twist. Plus, I always love me a dog lover.
Excited for the next one. Still on a Slaughter kick.

Can’t believe it’s taken me so long to read this. I accidentally read a couple of the later books from this series a few years ago thinking they were stand alones. I absolutely loved them and knew I had to read these from the start.
The beginning of this book was exceptional and I had my jaw on the floor a couple of times as Slaughter tricks you into thinking one thing, then reveals a completely different narrative. I do think this slowed down about towards the middle and end, but still a great thriller and Will Trent will always have my heart.

I had a really good time with this. There were a few things that simply annoyed me, Angie’s character specifically. While I did guess who the killer was, I enjoyed the journey to find exactly why and how. Can’t wait to continue on.
