The writing in this book is uneven. The first half, Moore's childhood, reads with the unrelenting humor and speed of a folksy Aaron Sorkin. In the second half, Moore's journey into adulthood and ministry, that voice is all but lost, and the detail turns into a bare accounting of events.

"I'd spent my entire adult life looking for someone I'd already found. Looking for something else about him. For what his face looked like in this light or that ... looking up and down the lives of those who'd also searched for him and found him to see if they'd stumbled onto something I'd missed."

I was not prepared for how I would respond to this memoir. I was shocked at how much Beth Moore's story resonated with my own story. I was surprised at all the emotions and tears this brought up for me. As a woman in ministry who also started by serving middle school girls, so much of this book was comforting to me. I felt very seen and known in such a unique way. I would recommend this to any woman to read, but especially to any woman in ministry.

Several friends had read it and connected with it. I did not. I don’t mind religion being a central theme of a book, especially a memoir, but a good chunk of it was more evangelism and less self-reflection. It was annoying. It felt like she was using the book as a way to get converts. It wasn’t until far into the book that there was any compelling content for me (will leave out why so as to avoid spoilers).

I did enjoy her references to places in and around Houston since I’ve got lots of emotional ties and memories in them all, but I was surprised she left out any references to Harvey because it was such a big moment in recent Houston history. Even if she wasn’t personally affected, everyone in Houston knows at least one person who was, and it was a big deal to all of us. It’s like writing a book about the early 2000s in NYC and leaving out 9/11.

She’s gone through some tough stuff. I hope the rest of her life is a little easier.
