One of the worst books I've read in a while. It was a slog to get through. To its credit, there were some interesting factoids mixed in, but the characters in this book were all so unpleasant and grating. I just don't know what the point of this book was meant to be... everything is terrible and maybe it would be less so if we had more of an appreciation of the past?

Lots of smart, funny observational takes but I found all the anthropology lessons pretty tedious
Interesting narrative structure, but unfortunately so boring.
I lost interest in the characters and the subject. I really liked the main character, the female agent 'Sadie' and Bruno Lacombe but I got bored in the end. I think I was not in the mood for a story set in the French countryside at that point. I love Kushner all the same though :)
