While this was the enjoyable read I expect from Montgomery, I didn't love it, and don't feel compelled to finish the series. I completely understand why some of my friends prefer Emily to Anne, but I found her poetic angst not as relatable to me. I found Dean Priest uncomfortable as well. Emily and Anne are very different, but many other characters are similar types, and the storylines are a little too familiar. This strikes me as something of a "which order is the right order of Narnia books" thing, in that I bet it matters a great deal which you read first in who you like better. So, if you have a girl who is destined to be a poet or a storyteller, give her Emily first.
For years I've heard about readers debating who's better--Emily or Anne. After finally reading the first of the Emily books, all I can say is I am so happy I live in a world where I can read and love both. So, so good.

Did not age well. Very similar to author's other book, Anne of Green gables in story line. Slog to get through parts. Will not be reading any of the other books in this series.
Graphic: Emotional abuse, Grief, Death of parent
Moderate: Animal death, Abandonment
Minor: Adult/minor relationship, Child abuse, Child death
These are very similar to Anne of Green Gables and have the same type of feel, without as much of Anne's feistiness. Emily gets into just as many 'scrapes', but she is a little more demure about it all. Still a fun read for any girl.
