"Floating upward through a confusion of dreams and memory, curving like a trout through the rings of previous risings, I surface. My eyes open. I am awake."
I liked how the author could describe so I could easily imagine the landscape, however, I feel like the last 60 pages slowed down and drew out too long.
Stegner writes epics, slow and sweet. I have not been able to get into Angle of Repose, but Crossing to Safety had me rapt in the first chapter. How many times did I pause on sentences, reading them over and over again, wishing I'd written them, wanting to memorize them forever. And the ending had me in tears on an airplane-- and almost again later, missing the characters.
This was just too slow for me. I liked it, it wasn't that I didn't like the story. I only read it because of book club. His writing just isn't my style...

Elegant. Masterful. Honest. One to savour in front of the wood stove. Stegner is the real deal - a writers writer. His awareness and sense of time and place just take me away. 5 Stars
Have read this twice. Love Stegners writing and what he has to say about love and friendship with this novel.
