This is a brilliantly crafted book, a detailed view of strong friendship over time. Life's frustrations, how experiences change us, tolerance for other's shortcomings, and the impact of wealth. The characters and this story stayed with me and grew even after I had finished it. Charity, now she deserves a book to herself doesn't she? Or is that the point of this book: without other people around, what would Charity have been? Perhaps a more intriguing question: what would Charity have been in a world where women had careers? A CEO I suspect.
The time frame appears to be exactly that of Stonor by John Williams, and the contrast of that oppressed life with the much happier life of these characters, was quite unavoidable.

Loved the writing, well developed characters, emotional highs and lows. I bought into every description, every situation. And that's rare for me. I almost always have some criticism of some situation that I find not at all plausible. The version I read is from the modern library classics. I would recommend reading the afterword first!

I was drawn in by the descriptions of the New England and Midwest landscapes, encouraged by the hope of young married people building a life together, and fortified by the complexities of life, love, and growing older alongside your people.

This... this is a tough book to swallow because it hits home. I've just finished it, and I'm not entirely sure I get the complexity and depth of this book. Not a short read, per se, but thick with thoughts, images, and language.
