The book started off slow and if I had not been facing a 5 hour plane flight with no other reading material, I would have put it away and missed out on a fabulous story. Once Larry begins the story of his friends the Langs, I became completely involved in the story. It meandered through years and moved back and forth between the story of Larry and his wife Sally and their friends over the course of 40 years. So beautifully and simply told, I was glad to be free of any interruptions while reading it. Don't pass up the chance to read this tale of friendship and love!
"Tracing the lives, loves, and aspirations of two couples who move between Vermont and Wisconsin, it is a work of quiet majesty, deep compassion, and powerful insight into the alchemy of friendship and marriage."

This was a labor of like. I am not that enamored with the academic world and the trials and tribulations of tenure, and publish or perish. I appreciated the beautiful writing and structure of the novel, but i just couldn't get that excited about the characters or what was happening to them. There was a lot of pointless wandering sections that just seemed to be an exercise in touting literary knowledge that didn't relate so much to the story.
That said, i recognize that this is a prize winning classic American novel and certainly I am the dope for not appreciating it.

Before my book club discussion I would have rated this a 3... but after I'm rating it a 4. The writing is great, and it's a beautiful story about friendship. This is not a thriller and there aren't big drama moments so read it through the lens of human connection and appreciation for true and long-lasting friendships. And definitely read in your book clubs - we had such a great discussion about it!
Whew. Real life is so dang complex. Showing up for people matters so much.
