I liked this very much. I felt like I totally got the characters, their motives, and everything they did made sense to me. The end was as infuriating as it was understandable.
What a book - simple, yet deeply complex in the relationship/friendship of two couples. I am a lover of character driven novels and this may be at the top of my list.

One of my most favorite books ever. So simple and understated yet detailed and expressive.
"She will burn bright until she goes out; she will go on standing on tiptoe till she falls."
One of those books that makes sure you slow down and pay attention to every sentence. I had to start a list of vocabulary words and get out something to mark favorite passages--something I never do.

"How do you make a book that anyone will read out of lives as quiet as these?" Wallace Stegner did just that in Crossing to Safety. It is a cozy, content, comfort read that you just want to savor. Stegner's setting style draws you in and makes you want to stay.
Couldn't get into this one. Found the characterization unrealistic and stilted.
so, i remember reading this back in 1987 or so when it was newly published. at the time i thought this book was incredibly good, today i can't imagine why i felt that way. it's the story of two couples who meet in the 1930s during the depression (seems to be a key word, that) and follows their lives & fortunes and misfortunes up until the death of one of the characters. Stegner's prose is elegant but i remember looking up from one long paragraph where Larry is considering the many kinds of trees in the woods near Battel pond and thinking "why did i just have to read the names of all of these different trees?" it was kind of over the top and just plain boring! this wasn't as great a read as angle of repose.
A quiet novel about little moments, but impressive in its depiction of four people -- two couples -- and their relationships throughout their lives. It's a reflective novel -- the narrator prefers to tell you about life and living it, rather than reveal that through action, and full of insights you'd expect from someone late in their life.
popsugar 2021 - bestseller from the 1990s (kinda, sorta)
