It's hard to imagine reading Raymond Carver and not appreciating it. That said, I am especially glad that I cracked open Carver while living in the state he grew up in: it was an extra-layer of enjoyment to see the now-familiar names of Washington towns and rivers. Favorite stories: Why Don't You Dance?, A Serious Talk.

I saw Birdman and I loved it and naturally I saw it again four times and then I wanted to read the book that the play in Birdman is based on so naturally I bought this and naturally I read it in a day and naturally I thought it was great.
The stories are, for the most part, short and sweet. Well, more like grim than sweet, but still. Even if some of them were a bit ambiguous and hard to decipher, they all create a great American atmosphere. Don't pick this one up for plot, pick it up for individual scenes. Each story is essentially a painting and Carver's writing is unlike almost anything I've ever read in its simplicity and realism. A great fast read.
