The first few stories feel sort of filler-y, but he gets the weak ones out of the way early and finishes very strong. If anyone who has read this wants a laugh, go to the Wikipedia page for this collection (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/What_We_Talk_About_When_We_Talk_About_Love) and read the plot summaries for all the stories. They all sound totally absurd, like Carver himself took it upon himself to pare down his writing to make it even more bare bones. In fact, maybe don't even read this book. Incredibly moving vignettes about everyday life; the mundane, the tragic and the beautiful. Carver says so much of the human condition is so very few words.
