I grew up in the community where this book is set with a hard working, single, Trinidadian mother. Everything about it resonates. Such a well-written book capturing the essence and beauty of the Rouge Valley and the complex lives of so many people who call it home.

This book was not easy to read, it lets you in on a world different and more stigmatized than most. But the connection, love and hurt felt for each character is strong. The way the author writes is eloquent and powerful and chapters passed quickly. The way Michael speaks about his brother is especially touching.

A very visceral and searing short coming of age story in which racism and police brutality feature heavily.

It’s also the story of the deep bond between two brothers and the profound grief of a family and if a mother who had big dreams for her sons.  Unfortunately, the realities of being an immigrant family, with a different skin colour, and being male mean that you are guilty until proven innocent and are subject to many prejudices that others never have to face.

An excellent piece of Canlit.

This book was tough to rate. It’s so beautifully poignant and sad, so it’s not exactly an enjoyable read but I still got through it very quickly. i almost wish it was a little longer and yet i feel it was just the right length. it’s downfall were sometimes I found myself zoning out a little, and I wish we had explored Francis as a character more. Sometimes the time jumping was a bit confusing, but I did think this element was well done.
