I’m reading through these books as part of the read-aloud program I’ve put together for my three year-old son. I firmly believe he’s still too young for any kind of formal education, but I also passionately believe that the most powerful thing I can do to shape their education is read aloud with them. That being said, the Mercy Watson series are PERFECT for kids ages 3-6. My three year-old giggles all the way through, and even my five year-old is engaged and chuckling the entire time. I read no more than three chapters per day in order to accommodate the limited (read: almost nonexistent...) attention span of a three year-old. But my five year-old always begs for more!

I've been trying to find easy, but enjoyable, chapter books to read aloud to my 4 year old. We've tried a number of different books, including the first Mercy Watson book, but many are too wordy, or have vocabulary from 50 years ago. (In case others are searching too, the Princess in Black series by Shannon Hale are great, and so so funny).
The first Mercy Watson book wasn't that great, but I decided to give this one a try. And it was pretty good. Enough pictures, short chapters. Hardly any "foreign" vocabulary for a 4 year old. (Not that learning new vocabulary words is bad, but for my purpose of introducing chapter books, I really want something she can enjoy and understand. We can start adding in new vocabulary once she likes to sit through chapter books).

Going back and rereading the Mercy series.
Mercy and friends always make me laugh! I really loved this one since we get to see some old friends from the series.
