I loved the characters and how they interacted with each other. Beautiful memories.

This is a short story capturing the innocence of childhood, the importance of friendship and the simplicity of life without electronic devices and tons of material things. There is no hustle and bustle of Christmas, there is no stress, there is no consumerism as we know it today. It was written in 1956 and set in the 1930’s.
For such a short story, there is a lot to unpack. Juxtaposed against the innocence of childhood are darker themes such as poverty and loneliness and the human condition.
Although this story didn’t leave me in the pile of tears that Ann Patchett suggested, it certainly gave me a lot of food for thought.
